FO buyside in Charlotte at a MM or MO in nyc at a BB bank?

Current a senior at uni and this is for full time analyst. Want to be somewhere in FO NYC ultimately, but not sure if it would be hard to lateral from either firms. Should I just take the offer in Charlotte? Would appreciate any thoughts.

Take the Charlotte offer for a few different reasons. Most importantly, I cannot stress the importance of the difference in difficulty of moving from FO to FO vs MO to FO. It will make your career path much simpler by taking the FO in Charlotte and then transferring to NYC if you still wish.

Honestly, it seems like an ideal situation and I’m a little jealous. As someone who was in NYC, it is going to take some time for NYC to get back to what it was. This is the perfect opportunity to be in a cheaper COL city that is still fun, not to mention warm, to save up some money, get a little tan, and move to NYC when it’s back to its level when you can enjoy it a bit more. Sounds like a win win to me.

Thanks for the input! That makes sense and I understand that a FO offer in Charlotte is still better career wise. Didn't mention this but would you still pick Charlotte if some of your college friends are in NYC? Don't want to pick a location just because of social, but it's a factor and definitely still worried about making friends in Charlotte since idk anyone there.

Of course that should be considered and I applaud you for thinking about that. I feel like sometimes people on here can be so career-focused that they disregard the other factors.

This makes the decision a bit harder. Nobody wants to move away from their friends. Provide a little more context on your situation: What is the MO NYC role? Do you have an exploding offer or is there still time to discover an alternative opportunity?

What I meant by alternative option is that if you’re just in talks with a company you can leverage the offers to expedite the recruiting process. Even if you’re not, you could still do this with jobs you have applied to if they get back to you early enough.

I’ve always found that for whatever reason whenever I got an offer from a company and recruiter other positions, I had a much higher success rate after I told them I had another offer. You could try to leverage both offers for other NYC roles. Obviously, easier said than done but worth pursuing over the next month.

Take the FO role in Charlotte, master the markets, apply to NYC roles a year or so out. Or try to last second finesse something better with your existing offer in hand as leverage. Pretty late now though...
