follow up with alumni

when writing a thank you email to alumni after an informal meeting, is it a good idea to ask for a recommendation on a book or website to learn more about his group? i want to keep our conversation going, and i really want to learn more about the group as well
if not, what kind of questions are good to continue the conversation? thanks

You should ask that question/something similar during the interview. Apart from that, you can email him to tell him that you got an interview with his firm, if you have a very detailed/firm specific question, also email him when you finally accept an offer. You can also send him something that you both have an interest in.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

You could always ask for him to recommend some other people in the group to meet with/speak with. That might be a good way to keep the conversation going. Even if nothing comes out of those additional contacts, at least you widened/increase your contact base.

anyway, that is what I usually try to do. Always good for a few extra informational interviews/ meet n' great type stuff.....
