For those who have completed an BB IB Summer internship, was it a 'surprise' whether you converted/failed to convert?
I'm currently interning in an American BB in London (it's BofA, not like it matters cause its anon). I've struggled with some minor anxiety throughout my life which has somewhat resurfaced ever since I started interning a few weeks ago. I would imagine that's somewhat natural given the calibre of some of the people interning here.
I'm really unsure about what to think about my performance so far. On one hand, I feel like my work quality has been good, and I've had basically only positive networking chats with individuals on my team (and I've spoken to a very large % of people on it so far). I like to think I've asked some good questions so far, which my development officer/line manager has praised me for as well.
All that being said, I'm still feel some existential dread that I will not convert which I attribute to uncertainty behind the quality of the other interns. I'm certain that each of us is competent, but ofc I'll never know how well liked I am relative to the other interns, how well received my questions are compared to theirs etc. It's honestly been quite crippling these last few weeks.
Long winded first world problems aside, I'd really like to know from your experience, as to whether your conversion/failure to convert ever came as a shock to you specifically.
If its a SA its quite a black box as SAs compete with OC too (which you may have / havent worked with them in any project) and even if teams like you HR has the last word in most US BBs.
Nonetheless if you have been doing well during the SA dont worry its usually easy to see who will convert, let me know if anything unclear
It was pretty clear for me. When given the offer my bank told me they were ready to give me an offer from my mid review. I was an up and running analyst for the second part of my SA.
Now this year is completely different with the current situation. I would suggest you focus on 1) your main case/tasks given by your team(s) and 2) being liked by the team. Set up unformal calls with people after a first call and chat about other stuff than work - your ECs, passions etc.
Don’t think about others - it’s only about you. Do your best and if you don’t get it, people in london are quite flexible for you to do another summer internship at other banks - that doesn’t happen in the US. If you need some help PM me.
Thanks for your comment! Do you recommend asking people if you can help with something, and reaching out to people outside your small team to network?
If you are bored yes, would focus my networking efforts with the team hiring you.
Thanks man, I’ll try to keep this in mind. I’m usually quite good at disassociating myself from the outcome like this, but I’m finding it hard to do so here because conversion would be so life changing for me and my family. Oh well, fingers crossed all goes well.
What enabled you to be an up and running analyst as an SA? Asking as a new analyst with no internship experience.
I had a good amount of work experience, got trusted by my team as I was delivering good product on time that was reliable and was taking initiative. Led to being staffed on a live deal with a VP&ED as the sole junior.
