found an alumnus at goldmans, what do i write him?

Going thru the alumni book at my school . Small liberal arts college. Not target, but 2nd tier. Found a guy 12 yrs past who is senior vp at goldmans. Was on hockey team. I am on hockey team.

Any examples on this site as how to approach they guy saying what in an email?

Am I subtle and say, am looking for career advice in IB from a fellow hockey player, or go direct and say, looking to break into IB, can you help a guy out, or what?

Do I make small talk, like you would be glad to know that the team had a better year last year than in a long time.

I don't know how to approach this and would appreciate if there is something on this site that has sample cover letters, or just what to put in there. thanks.

I know my brother did something like this a while ago. Tell him you found his details in the alumni book and were very impressed with his achievements. Ask him if he would be willing to answer a few questions. If he replies- ask a few 'intelligent' questions. You could keep slipping him details of your hockey team performance, you know to make small talk, as you mentioned. Hopefully, if he's friendly he'll ask to meet for coffee after a couple of mails. Or maybe you could suggest it.

Best Response

This may just be me, but if a student were to reach out for advice and questions, I would rather have a phone convo with them (or if they are close, meet up for coffee). Writing an email to respond to "intelligent questions" takes time and effort, verbalizing an answer on the spot is easier.

I would craft an email telling him you've found him in the alumni book, you're impressed by his accomplishments, and you are interested in a career in banking and would appreciate his advice. Then include a short tidbit about yourself (experience, hockey, etc). And include your resume for his reference. Some of the WSOers may disagree with me here - saying that attaching an email is presumptuous - but anyone on the opposite end of this email is not stupid. They know you want some sort of help, and they'll ask you for your resume as their 1st email response to you anyway (if they respond, that is). And if you attach your email (so long as you aren't a douche in your intro email paragraph), his curiosity will pique and he'll give it a 10 second skim.

On the subtlety question. I would bring hockey up. Then you guys have something in common to talk about. You're "not subtle" when you out and out say "I want a job, hook me up" in your 1st email.

thanks. agree. like the idea if i attach resume, he knows that i am not just sending an email to chat, but want a job, but more subtle way than saying, gimme a job.

Dear god whatever you do, be sure to never, ever use the word "Goldmans" again. (since you used the word twice, I will assume it was not a typo)

The firm is named Goldman Sachs, aka Goldman. It is not plural, and it is not a possessive. Those are the type of details that will determine whether your email is responded to or if it is immediately sent to the trash.

Also be sure to find out what department he works in, and do not assume he works in IBD. Saying that, regardless of what dept he is in, you should be frank with him about your goals and you should ask him to give you 15 minutes on the phone to learn more about the firm and ask some good questions. Good luck, and make sure to have your story straight before you talk to him and do tons of research about the firm, banking and so forth.

Also definitely, positively use the hockey connection!
