Fraternities, good or bad for IB?
I was recently admitted to USC (Marshall) and it looks like I will be going there next year for undergrad. My goal is to get into IB on the East or West coast. I was wondering what people's thoughts were on fraternities. I know the basics about frats, but I was wondering specifically how they would help/hurt in regards to IB.
General advice is appreciated, and if anyone went to USC I would really like to ask some more questions about specifics there.
Here is what I'm thinking so far:
Pros:
- Good connections? Not sure how true this is for IB.
- Upperclassmen who can help with business school related stuff.
- Instant group of friends, parties, social aspect, etc.
Cons:
- My grades could tank
- Could be less involved in business-related extracurriculars that boost resume due to time commitments with fraternity
I'd say the pros are probably greater than the cons, especially if you have brothers in IB. Networking is more important than getting a 4.0 GPA.
Probably a toss up. The alumni / networking benefits can't hurt, but they're probably not going to be as useful as you think (for most people in a fraternity, it's relevance to their life peaks junior year, then declines quickly).
You're right that you don't want it taking up too much of your time and crowding out more valuable extra curriculars or time that would be spend studying, but that should be avoidable.
Definitely a pro. Just don’t let your grades drop. Maintain that ~3.65
