Free resources to check PE firm's historical IRR
Where can I find for free a resource to look at PE firm's performance (IRR) for their last few funds? Based on Google searches, a platform like Pitchbook provides this, but I don't have access to that.
Honestly PE firms massage the numbers and dress that thing up so much that I don't trust anything out there in the world (and am not sure about Pitchbook having that info either). The most fool-proof way to get that info is to find a friend who works for (or employs) a placement agent and/or investment consultancy (Cambridge, Mercer, etc.) as those guys actually do the work to sanitize the data and make it apples-to-apples
All hail subscription lines.
Best way to do it is to look at the reporting of the big LPs - e.g., big pension funds like CALPERS. They'll list the fund vintages they've invested in and IRR. They'll also have extensive volume/diversity of funds they've invested in so you can usually find what you're looking for.
But PE-biz-dev is right, most reported numbers are messed up. I'm also not 100% clear whether the reported numbers are just for the capital they've invested or for the entire fund. Because if you try to cross-reference across sources it gets pretty screwed up.
Try checking Bain global PE report, most likely there will be at least some general info there (or at least of the sources available)
