Friends Getting Offers First
Anyone here have friends at university who scored IBD offers before them?
Anyone here have friends who they went to university with, are now working in IBD, while you are still trying to get into that firm?
Anyone here have friends who they studied with, who are now a second year analyst+ and you are a first year analyst working 'under' them?
Does that suck? Or doesn't it matter?
(I'm asking this because some people get offers straight out of undergrad. Some people get offers after completing a masters. This makes the masters student 1-2 years junior to the person who got the offer after undergrad).
Well, most people when I graduated had scored jobs before me. In fact a ton had them lined up already coming out of school. It was slightly awkward at first, but more in the I'm pretty jealous of you but now I have to work even harder kinda way. If you keep it in perspective and understand that things happen different ways or whatever I don't think it is a big deal. I mean there are always people getting in ahead of you. Granted, I don't have to work with any of my peers and watch them suddenly become my boss but I'll tell you that in a few years I'd gladly take a job working under an old classmate of mine at a different firm. There are good and bad things in any scenario when something like that happens, but I think it is largely unavoidable.
Loving the avatar, shame he died in the end!
Easy answer: It sucks, AND it doesn't matter.
It neither matters, nor does it suck. If your gauge of success is whether or not you are as 'good' as your friends, then you need to reevaluate how you measure success.
this is the right perspective.
however, i do think it's somewhat normal to feel a tinge of jealousy when those close to you are getting offers and you're not. most of us have been there before. but if you keep yourself leveled and work hard, i believe almost anybody can get into this industry.
If you are in the same firm, you are in the same team. Suck it up and DO YOU JOB. social life and work life are two different environment. Be professional.
It sucks, but that's because you don't have a job, not because they do have a job.
no... because everyone on wso was the first in their state to get an FO finance job. cmon son.
I was curious because if you studied together, and then they are (say) analyst 3 and you are analyst 1, will they still pass over their 'grunt' work and make you feel like 'analyst 1', with a 'haha I'm above you' attitude... or does no one really care so long as you get the job done.
imagine the same situation, but in the military. OCS vs. enlisted. now that's way worse.... not even on the same track. and you have to salute them and call them sir. now that sucks.
Its not about age. If you are an "analyst 1" then you're getting the work of a a1.
work hard, do well.
Solution found. Just make new friends or kill them like Bateman.
Be happy for them. There's always somebody who's going to be doing better than you; at least they're your friend!
A friend I summered had fraternity brothers who graduated and were starting their second year as an analyst. He wasn't in the same group as them so it wasn't an issue work-wise, but I know he is considering that group for FT.
