Have any of you/do you know anyone who has made the transition from an IB analyst into a sales role for a healthcare or tech firm? As a quick background, I am currently in my 3rd year as an IB analyst and am looking to make the lateral into the sales world. This is not a "last resort" option (I have Aso promote on the table and I never went through PE recruiting since it never interested me as a career). The reason I want to pursue a sales role is that it is much more eat what you kill as opposed to IB where comp doesn't vary as much at a junior level.
Would be great to get perspective and advice on how you made transition/lifestyle change/comp change etc.
*As a side note, I can't thank WSO enough for helping me get to where I am at in my career since I found this site my first year of college.
Don't know much about the direct pivot because your profile may be more suited for the finance department of an F500 but a stepping stone could be consulting. A friend went from BB ER to MC and is learning a whole set of new skills that he could use to pivot to (almost) any role in an F500.
Sales is one of the must underrated and misunderstood career paths post-banking. A lot of people in finance don't hold sales people in particularly high regard but combining the finance/strategy skills you've picked up so far with experience in sales is a fast track to the C suite. For the simple reason that most people do one or the other but not both. Look at the CEOs of most major healthcare/medical companies and you'll note that a huge percentage started in and/or spent long stretches of their careers in sales. (It pays well too).
This is how I was looking at it as well, the issue is finding a way to break in and explaining your story. Also, pay seems like it will also take a hit but if you're good then that won't matter in 6 months.
