Fucked up Freshman GPA (2.8) - What now?

Hi Guys,

I really messed up - I got two internships (small PE and small Corporate Finace) in my first year got really sick and only did about 40% of the course load and messed up my GPA - 2.8 (4:1 scale).

However at my university some of my classes are way more important than those I took - meaning I could theoretically end up with a 3.85 (realistically 3.6).

My question is: would I still have a chance at IB? I know that my GPA would be alright - however I am worried due to the fact that I did bad at the beginning of university - and did ONLY 40% OF MY COURSES.

How much does this matter? Would I'd be better if I'd go to grad school? Do I even have a chance at grad school (GMAT ~760).

Thank you guys!

You'll be fine, you have plenty of time to get that GPA up.

If you have a strong Sophomore year and a strong first semester Junior Year, you'll be fine in time for recruiting.

Also, any chance you can re-take any of the classes you did poorly in? If you can handle a slightly higher workload in the next few semesters, taking an additional course that is a re-take, will help you to erase some of those low grades.

If you actually have a 760 GMAT, that's good to put on the resume as well.

At the end of the day, if you can end up with a 3.5/3.6 with a 750+ GPA and good internship experience, you'll be as competitive as anyone for IB,Grad School, or whatever you want to pursue.

The thing is that recruiting kicks off in Spring of sophomore year so you have 1 sem to bring it up. If I were you I would take classes this semester if it can increase your GPA and I would also take classes in the break between fall and spring semesters. You want the GPA to be at least 3.5 but preferably 3.7+ (specially if you are a non-target). Also, take more than the usual credits. Instead of 15 hours try taking 18/21 hours.
