Full Time Recruiting: When To Begin and How to Expand A Reliable Network

Hey All,

I will be working at a top MM this summer (Target, ~3.7 GPA) but I am interested in having a shot at EBs and BBs since I signed my offer fairly early. The thing is I wanna begin as soon as possible and, while I do have a network from last year that I could likely reach out to with varying degrees of success, I would also be very interested in starting a tailored approach to networking with new contacts where I follow up ~every 2 months with a short phone call and really build much stronger relationships.

The natural question that I will likely be asked is where I am working this summer and I am seriously worried that this sort of info might be passed on to the place i'm at this summer, is this likely to occur? I am aware that I should not open by basically asking/insinuating that I am looking at FT positions. So really what is the best way to structure my outreach/approach phone calls without me (or worse, the analyst/associate/VP) feeling like there is no direction/intent behind the call?

Any tips would be appreciated!

You got to be careful around starting a convo too early before you've even started your MM internship or they will ask you why you don't like the MM you're working at and you won't have a credible answer. It'll look like you are just a college gold digger. While people do understand that, you want to make sure your decision to go for EBs/BBs comes across professoinal and not like you are just jumping ship and are flaky as some more senior members may assume.

Just a thought, reach out to your prior contacts and frame the conversation as a catch-up with a focus on getting advice for how to kill it in your internship before your internship starts

then just keep in touch and a bit after you’ve started the internship then say you’re interested in there FT

Haven’t you heard that FT recruiting for the analyst class starting next year is pretty much done? Whatever effort you choose to make for FT recruiting would not bear any fruit. My best advice to you at this point is just accept this fact as a reality and move on. I have nothing more to say.
