Gaining experience to secure an Internship

I am a current Junior at a non-target. I work as a financial analyst for a smaller company within the main city in my state. I changed my major to Finance (from poli sci) last year, and have been interested in IBD ever since.

As I have applied for internships (at BB, Elite Boutiques, and even small boutiques), I haven't broken through yet.

What other opportunities could I be pursuing while I am attending college so that I can become more reputable on my resume?

Note: outside my job I interned within the local legislature, wrote for a think tank, and was nominated for leadership positions in my community and within a non-profit.
