Game of Thrones On My Resume?
Hi everyone,
I was just wondering what you guys think about putting TV shows/movies in your interests section of your resume. I was thinking about adding Game of Thrones as this may appeal to many other people. The interests section is usually used for sports and games, but are TV shows fair game?
Wondering same thing for just ASOIAF in general
No, when people talk about interests they want to hear you play sports or do something part time.
In general, I would say no. It would be better to include sports, hobbies, traveling, etc. and not anything video game/tv related as those things can be taken out of context really easily when you aren't there to personally explain the significance/relevance of it.
If you put your favorite tv shows on your resume you're going to have a lot more free time to watch them. From home. On your couch. While unemployed. Tune in next week.
Lol, sad but true.
Ummmm, you may talk about it what's you hobby or interest when you're home or free, but maybe, just maybe some companies don't mind it, but in general....I think you better not...
Leave interests off the resume. When people ask you to tell them about yourself, then you can bring out interests.
Fake News.
I would automatically ding you, but then again, I am not in the industry (yet).
I have never been impressed with anything in the 'interests' section of a resume. At best, I'm neutral on it (such as when you list basketball, reading, woodworking, music) or disappointed (when you list underwriting your own deals, or your firearms training). Better to delete this section and give the valuable space to describing your actual relevant experience. If you can't fill a 1 page resume without using this section, you may not be ready for the job.
I've had many interviewers ask me about my interests/interest section to prove that I'm a sociable person. Not sure it'd be wise to remove it if you're just in college - it only takes up 1 line after all.
Damn it, no! It makes you look lazy. Use interests that involve using your body and/or mind. Playing musical instruments, painting, running, lifting, hiking, sky diving, writing, repairing motorcycles, collecting coins, blogging sculpture or even fucking LARP are all better than a TV show. Try to refrain from anything that could be perceived as illegal or violent, unfortunately this includes shooting/hunting (which is bullshit, but people are fucking sensitive). Anyways, you get the idea.
A friend of mine put South Park on his resume and ended up at McKinsey.
it's risky. I strongly dislike game of thrones (or anything that on non-live TV, for that matter). so if I was looking at your resume, it could actually hurt your chances.
stick to more neutral topics.
TBH, I, nor anybody around here, would want to work with someone managing $300k.
dont fucking do it. we just got one of these in my office and people thought it was super weird
Would agree with the others. Don't do it. Great conversation piece for the "meat the team" interview, but it doesn't belong on the resume. Remember - the "meat the team" interview goes both ways (as desperate as you want the job, you also want to make sure you want to work with these potential colleagues) - I don't think it's abnormal to ask what they do for hobbies or what they read/watch on tv. You try to find common ground because you'll be spending countless hours with these people.
lol
Lol. Check the time stamp. I was a few drinks down by that time. Meet***
Oh, and always say "no homo" to your same-sex counterparts when you meat the team. Unless it's intentionally homo. Then say "homo."
All men must bank
It's similar to putting video gaming or the likes on your resume. We all know that it's something most of us enjoy doing but it's not necessarily "proper" to put it on a professional resume. Millennials like us might have a good chuckle at it or even use as an ice-breaker, but there's also the chance of an MD/Director looking at it and think otherwise.
Had Seinfeld on my resume for years, led to a bunch of good conversations. Obviously you should know every episode cold. But more recently took the whole interests section out since it's really a waste of space.
I think the interests section is SUPER important on a resume and really shouldn't be taken off - especially in a heavy work environment cultural fit is key. That said, try to tie it to actions, just like other resume points. Like instead of saying you like running, show that you ran a marathon and a 5k last year. Plus, stuff like skiing and golf can be good cultural indicators. Generally gaming and TV is a no go, unless you like won an award or run a GOT blog or youtube channel or something.
I'll dissent from the common opinion and say its fine as long as you have more active things on there. You'll probably run into more, "so whats really great about that show anyways" instead of "So were you amazed with the Lannister's trap in the last episode?"
Anything sci-fi or fantasy doesn't belong on your resume. Same with video games.
Why not? Because while 30% of the US might be obsessed with GoT, plenty of people still think of the genre/show/tv in general as a brain drain. You don't want anything on your resume that could totally turn someone off to you as a candidate, even if its only a 1%-10% chance of that happening.
I have GoT in my interests section because it's a bad-ass TV show & dany is fire. I've done a lot of networking/interviewing & it's been a good talking point amongst the analysts. Although, one time I was in correspondence with an MD & he straight up told me to take it off... he did pass along my resume though haha.
I'm always amazed that some people actually get hired...
I would just be cautious and not put them on there, as others have said if they ask it gives you something to talk about in the interview - they won't ask if they can just read you enjoy 'finance/investing'.
Although, I had a friend who did and it paid off for him.
He had some obscure interest e.g. haberdashery and the interviewer just so happened to do this in his free time, would have been that one in a million scenario. Ironically, because the interview was so successful he now has no free time for haberdashery.
Throwing my $0.02 here: If you can frame it ion a way that doesn't make you sound dumb, do it. For example, putting "Film" or something under interests if you know your stuff about classics etc would probably make you look interesting, but "I LIKE TV" probably wouldn't.
I'd leave it off your resume and just wear chain mail, a cloak made of bear fur and be sure to wield your sweetest sword to the interview. Be sure to speak ye olde English in the interview as well. Refer to the receptionist as a "wench", etc.
