Gap Year (Post-HS, Pre-Uni)

Hi, I am deferring offers of admission for one year to two Canadian targets (Queens Commerce/Ivey AEO) and will decide at a later date as to which one I will attend. In the meantime and in my year off I will be volunteering abroad, most likely in Madagascar with Marine Conservation (6 months) and Tanzania for Community Development (2 months). So my question is; how does volunteer work/ a gap year look to prospective employers, specifically summer intern recruiting? How will they interpret the fact that my gap year volunteering/work has absolutely nothing to do with finance?

It will be an interesting talking point in interviews, but it won't get you the job or lose it for you. Re: nothing to do with finance - people don't want to hire finance robots, it's good to have other interests. Enjoy yourself and worry less about how every decision you make will affect recruiting.
