Georgetown McDonough vs. NYU Stern (PT Programs)

Hi everyone,
I have been working for a F100 since 2011. I started as a management analyst and recently got promoted to a senior consultant role within strategy department.

At 2014, I applied for top MBA programs and got in top 7 schools. During my decision process, I learnt that my wife was pregnant. This was definitely not in our plan and changed everything… Long story short, I could not go to my dream MBA program. My son is now 2 years old and I am ready to go back to school part time. In order to move forward within the company, I must have a MBA. All the future roles require MBA. Even I am a top performer, I will not be able to move forward in my company or will have hard time to get in top4 firms.

I know the differences between full time and part time degrees. Also. I am aware of the differences between top 7 programs and other schools like Georgetown and Stern (top 25). I live in DC area so I only consider Georgetown (best program in DC area) and NYU (best program in this coast). Money and travelling are not issue.

My observation;

Georgetown: Surprisingly, I am extremely impressed with them. I attended to couple classes. Professors are amazing and class format is very close to traditional MBA format. Also, class size is small which is another advantage. I met with several alumni & current students and they were smart and helpful. Their curriculum is very well balanced and close to a traditional MBA program. I do not know why but I feel very attached and connected. I also consider government contracting in the future and Georgetown has a lot to offer. My main concern is that Georgetown is only well known in DC area. I do not know if a MBA from Georgetown will provide any help in California or Portland.

NYU: I really want to go to NYU. It was my dream school but something is wrong. So far, I feel like I am just a number for them. I did not get the attention that I got from Georgetown. However, it is Stern and has great reputation around the country. Everyone knows NYU. Their class size is a lot larger than Georgetown and I am not 100% sure about the quality. I heard some amazing things about their PT program but also keep hearing everyone in New York has a PT MBA from them. My main concern is that I will not have enough time to network. Since I live in DC and have a son, I will not have any time during the weekdays for networking.

I only consider these 2 programs and do not consider any executive MBA. I was wondering if anyone has experience with these programs. Unfortunately, I had to give up on my full time MBA dream but I still want to get a good education from a reputable school. My post degree goal is to getting a promotion or moving to top4 consulting firms as associate or consultant. I know PT provides limited career changes but I have a great undergrad degree with very solid job experience. I want a solid and high quality MBA degree so I can enjoy it and achieve the next steps in my career path.

Thanks everyone

honestly, it is really really tough for both. If all metrics don't help, just choose the cheaper one..... most of the calendar events are prepped for full-timer schedules, the times are all over the place, and schools typically allot more OCR/career services for Full-Time crowd to raise their rankings metrics. If you are eager to be in those events obviously that networks might be better for GU (if you have flexibility to attend those things at nights, weekends, etc).

But programming-wise, NYU will have more things in general. McDonough MBA isn't sought after as much as NYU, so you might see a big dip in events vs. NYU has. Also in a few years, NYU MBA could knock more doors.

Understood you are only choosing between NYU and GU after cancelling full-time, but not sure why you needed some for California and Portland, but if those are that important - UC Berkeley and UCLA both have weekend cohorts. UCLA has FEMBA (fly in once a month type). Booth Kellogg both have weekend classes too, which could solve some....

Hey I'm going through the exact same situation , I loved the vibe at Gtown and think the alumni network will actually look out for one another and it give me more intro into govt money to raise capital potentially, but am worried NYU has the stronger name brand recognition and will look stronger on a resume than gtown, which did you end up going with and did you regret the choice?

I pretty much had to decide between Duke, NYU, and Gtown, and I ended up with Gtown. Gtown program is the closest experience to a full-time program, and I honestly have been enjoying it. The program is challenging and you would be surprised by the competition. If you plan to stay in DC area, Gtown has powerful alumni and recognition here. If you plan to go to other cities like NY, CA, TX, IL then NYU has a stronger look on your resume. However, I plan to move to a smaller state like GA, OH, MT post MBA. Based on my interactions, Georgetown is a very well known school, and it looks better than NYU on the resume. Companies pretty much don't know a lot about the MBA rankings in the smaller states but usually focus on the school name. All the TV shows, podcast, etc. makes Gtown a very attractive name in smaller states. NYU also does not allow you to attend recruiting events. Gtown has a close relationship with the full-time program, our electives are joint, and we all attend the same recruiting events. Your choice depends on your end goal. My goal was to have an experience that is close to the full-time program, and I honestly have been enjoying it.

FYI, part-time MBA is still a great investment and definitely pays-back. Since I started my program, I got one big promotion and more than $20k raise. If I don't move and stay in my current role, I am expecting another big promotion and another $20-$30k raise.

If this is all about having the MBA on your resume with long-term value, you get that same box to check whether it's FT, PT, or EMBA. If you open the door to EMBA, you also give yourself the option of UVA Darden and Cornell Johnson, which have better brands than McDonough outside of DC metro. Johnson's is a "board room" format, which I didn't research much. Darden has their own campus and cohort in DC, and I went to a few of their events and was very impressed with the program, staff, and students. I agree with the assessment that NYU did not have a very personal feel, and it seems like they might be in danger of diluting their brand with all of the PT and Executive formats on offer.
