Are you asking about the 15500 (that I believe replaced the 15400)? What you should know is that this watch (along with many other stainless sport watches) has seen a huge increase in popularity (and of course price in the used market). Getting one new and at msrp will be tough, the watch market is a bit insane right now. My recommendation would be to reach out to the AP boutiques and get your name on their waiting list. It may help to stop in and talk with a sales associate, describe what you are looking for and why, etc. I believe AP is selling mostly through their branded boutiques now (and were moving in the direction of only boutiques, maybe they still have a few authorized dealers). Last I checked waitlist was 1-3 yrs (if you could get on a list) and some places prioritize existing customers.
Appreciate it. I have a close friend with connections to several AD's - would it help if he put me in touch with them or not really?
Doesn’t hurt to try. Each AD is different and will have their own prioritization system. There are those that prioritize existing customers and spend, so if your friend has good connections they may be able to move you up to list (want to get more business from your friend, think you may be someone who will buy several watches, etc). I’ve been able to do that with a few watches.
Definitely reach out to your connections and local ADs. Really emphasize the fact that you could buy it on the spot and would do so, given the chance. If you're comfortable, mention you'd be willing to pay a slight premium too.
Highly unlikely you will be able to get one at retail price from an AD unless you have a huge buying history with them. Your best bet will be to pay above retail and buy it on the grey market.
Call multiple ADs, if they're close to you go in person instead of calling. Tell 'em what you want, that you can pay on the spot etc. Also if you're knowledgeable talk watches w them. Try to get a relationship going with them and there's a chance you can maybe jump the queue. But pretty much get on as many AD waitlists as you can. Building a relationship w a few isn't a bad idea in general if you're big into watches and plan on purchasing more in the future.
I've asked a number of ADs (some of which my parents / extended family has deep relationships and multiple purchases with) and the answers have been consistently 2-3 years current waitlist.
