Getting an internship/job from Brown

Hi all I am new to this forum and just had a few questions.

As a Brown student, I am wondering what I need to be doing in order to prepare to get an internship at a BB firm or at a private equity firm.

-First and foremost, I am Native American so I will probably try to apply for SEO for an internship opportunity as well as outside of the organization. My goal is a top BB firm like Goldman.

I would like to major in History or Philosophy and International Relations. I may major in Economics and Int. Relations, however. What would be the best major for opportunities at banks? Also, I have a strong interest in working abroad so an eventual goal would be to do some private equity work abroad. How should I start planning for this?

If I keep my GPA above 3.7, what are my odds of a BB internship/eventual analyst job at a firm like Goldman, or possibly even a company such as Bain? I am not against working in a boutique firm by any means, I'd just like to explore all of my options. I will try my best to network, but Im not sure how many Bain or Goldman employees are Brown alums.

Thank you and I would appreciate any and all advice!

What would be the best major for opportunities at banks? -> i'm not sure why you would think history would be preferred by banks over economics but if you know you want to be in this industry, there should be no reason not to major in it. that said, i HAVE known people with liberal arts backgrounds break into banking. i just don't understand why you wouldn't head in the direction you know you want to go though

Also, I have a strong interest in working abroad so an eventual goal would be to do some private equity work abroad. How should I start planning for this? --> seems like you're not interested in banking which means you're in the wrong forum? but in general best way is to get an internship in P/E domestically as an undergrad, then doing semester/summer/post-grad abroad and looking for work.

If I keep my GPA above 3.7, what are my odds of a BB internship/eventual analyst job at a firm like Goldman, or possibly even a company such as Bain? --> P/E and IB are different fields, so it sounds like you may want to clarify which one you're actually interested in? and without work experience entering either, even with a 3.7, is difficult (P/E probably more difficult). not sure what kind of answer you were looking for here but for the fun of it, how about 20% =)

3.7 puts you in range, so just keep it up. Would academically focus on what you think you'd excel in and then supplement it with some accounting/finance if your school provides that. Do some activities that demonstrate leadership and/or interest in finance...the native american thing will get you over the top...check out stuff like the Toigo Foundation, etc...there are a ton of minority recruiting programs (on GS's website)..even without this though, you seem well positioned...would gun for a sophomore internship somewhere

3.7 from Brown will keep you competitive. The major doesn't matter all that much, as long as you do well. A few economics courses is, however, important in that you need some baseline knowledge.

GS cares a lot about student involvement and student leaders, so get involved in a few activities you are passionate about.

Do network - Brown has a few high profile execs at GS, and it is a target school.

As for landing an analyst job at Bain Cap, it is EXTREMELY difficult without having connections or prior industry-related experience. Of those analysts that I know, they had prior summer internships at GS Tech, Media, Telecom and MS M&A.

Brown? I think you should just transfer to Wharton while you still can.

Good luck otherwise.

Can we ban these trolls, please?

I'm definitely not a know-it-all, and far from it, but it seems like a lot of people have taken a negative viewpoint on Brown and its potential to land kids in top BB and other banks such as Blackstone or Lazard. I'm new to this forum and I was wondering as a potential transfer student to Brown, why do people in this forum look down on Brown?
