Getting into an MBA program.
Just need some advice.
I am currently 2 years out of school, with a BA degree from university of Toronto, but I only have work experience in retail as a Assistant Manager.
I graduated with a 3.2 GPA. I also do not have much on campus experience, meaning I only joined one club in my 4 years there.
If i get a good score on the GMAT, do i still have a chance at getting admitted, if not, what steps do you recommend it take to increase my chances?
Thanks in advance!
Depends on the program, my friend
Agree with the above, it definitely depends on the tier of program you're going for. That said, a killer GMAT score will always help. Personally, I would say to hold off for at least a year before thinking about school. Often times, schools want to see progression in responsibilities, management, etc. over a job/career and two years isn't a lot of time to show that. One other thing I would consider is volunteering outside of work if you have time. Not sure if this is something you're currently doing or have thought about, but it can help your profile as a candidate stand out a bit depending on the volunteer work. Good luck!
I appreciate that
You can always get admitted, it just depends on what you're targeting.
Targeting a top US school with a 3.2 and only 2 years of retail experience, regardless of GMAT, will be an uphill battle (near impossible). But I'm sure there are plenty of decent programs that could help you land an improved role and let you in with a solid GMAT and some additional work experience.
To be honest, my best advice is to try to switch roles into something more "traditionally" business-y and work there for 1-2 years before applying, or at least something that might be more interesting from an admissions perspective. Retail is a tough sell, but things like the Peace Corps, being a teacher, etc. actually is viewed pretty favorably since it adds diversity to the class and can show you're able to lead people and make a positive impact. Recommendations from people you work under are a big part, and you want to be able to demonstrate a good impact wherever you've been working.
