Getting involved in NYC while working as a banker

I'm moving to NYC this July and I'm hoping to get involved in different communities like charities, clubs, etc. Anyone in IB hours has experience doing this and what are your recommendations?

Genuinely want to meet people and just get new experiences

I am on two "Junior boards" of relatively well known charities. The time committments are relatively minimal (few hours a month for each) and but I am also a second year analyst at a top bank with tough hours. It it tough but i make it work the best i can.

First, i was upfront with the other board members, saying that my job is unpredictable and requires long hours at times. Most understood as being in NYC almost everyone knows what IB is (plus another member is a VP at GS) So i make the meetings when I can and do my requires volunteering / fundraising on my own time.

Within my group, i have never really had too many issues (Unless you are in the the thick of a live deal once you say you have to slip out for an hour to make a meeting for a charity organization, people typically understand) But i also let people know of these meetings ahead of time so its on the radar.

TL;DR - its possible but requires careful planning and constant communication. Also assumes your group is comprised of actual human beings and not masochistic robots
