Given the backdrop of surging violent crime in New York City, do you feel safe going back to the office when the office reopens?

Seems like the surge in violent crime shows no signs of slowing even as the city gradually opens back up and offices plan to reopen soon.

And for those who are living under a rock: 15 people were shot in NYC this past Saturday compared to just one person a year ago.

Wow, just WOW. I see the WSO racists are out in full force this morning throwing MS. Look bigots, it doesn’t matter that nearly EvErY sInGlE AsIaN aTtAcK in NYC, and in fact an overwhelming majority of the violent crime in NYC and the rest of the country, is committed by 13%ers, it’s the fact that this country has a deeply ingrained white supremacy legacy that’s making them do it. I realize you rubes are too dense to understand how truly sophisticated and intelligent the “blame wypipo for everything” argument is, but why not read a book for once and finally leave your moms’ basements, Nazis!

Read this guys post closely.  He just admitted that most crime is committed by non-white groups then said that white supremacy is what made them do it.  So white people are what’s making black people attack Asian people.

Said it in a different thread but I’ll put it here for science: I’m genuinely convinced that liberals are not logically sound.  It’s like arguing with an emotional child

Each time I reread this I get even less sure if it's a troll or completely serious hahah

Well maybe if all these white supremacists would finally stop attacking Asians and others then we could get some peace in this city.

Perpetuating falsehoods like this reminds me of Tyler Perry's great speech at the Oscars. We need to stop all hate that includes white racists, black racists, Asian racists, everyone.

To spread the myth that only one skin color is responsible for all racism, even with clear evidence to the contrary, is itself direct support of hatred, racism, and violence.

Start loving everyone and come join the middle!

You do realize the majority of these attacks are perpetrated by non-white right? I've seen the stats around and when you reply to me freaking out I will pull them for you.

Realistically, every major city (LA, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Charlotte, etc) there is a minuscule chance you could be a victim of a crime. Just don't walk around drunk at 3am and you will be fine. College aged girls walk around the city alone all the time in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

If you honestly feel that unsafe going back to NYC just switch to a remote job in the suburbs...

Meanwhile in the actual Miami my friends have:

Been robbed on the street at gunpoint

Had a gun put in their mouth during a store robbery

Victim of home invasion

Stabbed to death in sleep

A narco was dumped on my street wearing a Colombian necktie when I was a kid.

You don't have a clue.

I suppose we can caveat that there is a minuscule chance you could be a victim of a crime in good neighborhoods in every major city

but perhaps Miami is unique in its crime

driving into the city from jersey using the Lincoln Tunnel i always get accosted by the homeless people begging (happens at 36th and 40th street entrance between Dyer-9th ave)...this weekend saw a group of 5-6 attack the car in front of me because the driver didn't want to pay the homeless guy who washed his windshield (uninvited) at the traffic light....the driver used his windshield wipers to try to get the homeless guy go away after just saying "no thanks" and waving him off didn't work...the homeless guy starts yelling that the driver hit him and then all his buddies swarm the car...took a minute for police to intervene.   i hate driving thru that intersection.

just google it...you're welcome

It's just people that have lived in gated communities or rich suburbs their whole life afraid of exaggeration on the news

Most people on this website can afford a minimum rent of $1,500. At that level, anywhere you rent is going to be safer than pretty much anywhere in the world. Its all about location - no one is saying brownsville is the safest place but I lived in the southstreet seaport, meatpacking, UES, and east village and at no point have I ever felt danger even when walking out the bars stumbling at 4am.

Do you live in nyc? Yes crime happens in all cities, in nice and not so nice places. I had a friend robbed at gunpoint in palm beach, sh*t happens.

The question is around whether or not this is a huge difference relative to before, whether the trend will continue and whether nyc is a “safe” place to live.

Too often, people that don’t live in nyc watch the news and looked at these aggregated stats and think the world is on fire. NYC is a large place, even within Manhattan you have different pockets of areas that are pretty different. My comment is that the “nice” areas of Manhattan are still very safe relative to other major cities. Not that crime doesn’t happen.

I’ve lived here for over 10yrs and have a reasonable comparison point (and have lived in other major cities) and right now I’m not very concerned. If things continue to get worse, then yes, that would be a reason for concern.

Not sure how one’s HS experience ties into this thread at all. That’s totally unrelated.

And just because no female banker has shared this concern with you does not mean that no female banker has this concern.

Also, someone’s at-work persona is usually just a facade.

It’s a risky world out there… I think it's smart to take some precautions:

  • Start by never leaving your house if you don’t have to.
  • If you do have to venture to the office, always wear a bullet proof vest.
  • Perhaps even invest in a bodyguard, but only if it’s a family friend you can trust.
  • Never open the door to strangers, especially those pesky delivery rapists.
  • If you can, try to move to a bungalow to avoid the risk of falling down the stairs.
  • Replace your knives with plastic throwaways, you don’t want to cut yourself whilst chopping veggie.
