Well there was a major uptick in hate crime during Trump’s presidency, which unfortunately has now lingered over to the Biden term. Clearly it wasn’t minorities doing hate crimes, that’s obvious.

Realistically, every major city (LA, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Charlotte, etc) there is a minuscule chance you could be a victim of a crime. Just don't walk around drunk at 3am and you will be fine. College aged girls walk around the city alone all the time in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
If you honestly feel that unsafe going back to NYC just switch to a remote job in the suburbs...

One of my best friends from school grew up in a rough area of Miami and his Dad would watch them go to the school bus and his wife go to her car holding a loaded .45 on the porch.
I could care less about my safety - but if saying I feel unsafe will get me out of having to go back to the office... then I will say that. I will say whatever it takes to prevent going back into the office.

I have a higher chance of getting into a serious car accident in my home town than I do of being the victim of a violent crime in NYC.
Hell, Dallas and Houston have higher violent crime rates on a per capita basis. I don't hear about how dangerous those cities are all the time.
Well, Dallas and Houston are more segregated, and more people are commuting by car. NYC is a lot more integrated and lots of people commute using public transit.
driving into the city from jersey using the Lincoln Tunnel i always get accosted by the homeless people begging (happens at 36th and 40th street entrance between Dyer-9th ave)...this weekend saw a group of 5-6 attack the car in front of me because the driver didn't want to pay the homeless guy who washed his windshield (uninvited) at the traffic light....the driver used his windshield wipers to try to get the homeless guy go away after just saying "no thanks" and waving him off didn't work...the homeless guy starts yelling that the driver hit him and then all his buddies swarm the car...took a minute for police to intervene. i hate driving thru that intersection.

Most people on this website can afford a minimum rent of $1,500. At that level, anywhere you rent is going to be safer than pretty much anywhere in the world. Its all about location - no one is saying brownsville is the safest place but I lived in the southstreet seaport, meatpacking, UES, and east village and at no point have I ever felt danger even when walking out the bars stumbling at 4am.

Been in nyc this whole pandemic, and yes I feel very safe. In the west village area, no issues or concerns. Not sure what people are so concerned about, this is an incredibly safe city. While there has been more crime during the pandemic than previously, Manhattan, and the “nice” areas within manhattan are very safe.
Crime has been occurring in the nice areas of the city too.
Do you live in nyc? Yes crime happens in all cities, in nice and not so nice places. I had a friend robbed at gunpoint in palm beach, sh*t happens.
The question is around whether or not this is a huge difference relative to before, whether the trend will continue and whether nyc is a “safe” place to live.
Too often, people that don’t live in nyc watch the news and looked at these aggregated stats and think the world is on fire. NYC is a large place, even within Manhattan you have different pockets of areas that are pretty different. My comment is that the “nice” areas of Manhattan are still very safe relative to other major cities. Not that crime doesn’t happen.
I’ve lived here for over 10yrs and have a reasonable comparison point (and have lived in other major cities) and right now I’m not very concerned. If things continue to get worse, then yes, that would be a reason for concern.
OP must have been bullied in HS. Don't know anyone I work with (ex-women bankers) that would say they feel unsafe going back to work. Would ask HR if you could WFH for the rest of your career.
