Glenn Youngkin, Ex-Carlyle CEO, is now the GOP nominee for Governor of Virginia.

Here's a market watch article on him:

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/glenn-youngkin-…

Any thoughts on him or his campaign? I doubt he has a chance in Virginia but hey you never know, Massachusetts has a republican governor too.

One of my good friends was an organizer of the Virginia GOP convention. I think it's smart that they did the ranked-choice voting rather than have someone win the nomination with 30% of the vote. Anyway, he has a chance if he runs on bread-and-butter issues (anti-Critical Race Theory, against punitive punishment of the poor on parking tickets, against speed cameras, against police ticket quotas, etc.). If he keeps to a populist, relatively non-partisan message he has a very good chance. Problem is, it's very difficult to get the ear of any top candidate, even for party officials, as my friend is. I helped my friend commission a poll on bread-and-butter issues and found them to be overwhelmingly popular among all demos, so armed with that info we're trying to get it in front of the candidate. But the harsh reality is, most politicians are arrogant, narcissistic morons who think they know best, so convincing Youngkin to take a radical new approach may be a tall task. Also, not sure if the richest guy in the room is the best messenger of the bread-and-butter issues, but it is what it is now.

I'm sure Mr. Youngkin is a nice guy, but frankly he seems lame as fuck. His website doesn't even state what his positions are and just by looking at him I can tell that he's going to become a milquetoast establishment eunuch who still thinks it's the GOP of the 2004 (tax cuts for anti-American corporations and Middle Eastern wars). Also him coming from Carlyle certainly isn't going to help mobilize his voters in a time when Wall Street (and corporate America more generally) has gone insane with woke partisan politics. On the other hand, these are the sort of people who generally inhabit modern day Virginia, so maybe he'll appeal to somebody.

That said, he will likely be facing Terry McAuliffe, a corrupt, unprincipled aspiring tyrant and Beltway swamp creature. So I guess I'll root for Youngkin.

It’s true that he won’t appeal to the working class voter but that’s not the vote he will need to get to win this election imo. Densely populated but highly liberal suburbs of DC including Arlington and Fairfax County single handed flip the state solid blue. These people are well to do and highly educated. I agree with Memberberries that he needs to keep his audience in mind and address issues such as critical race theory in the school system that will help to win votes. Focusing on issues such as gas prices or small businesses isn’t going to get him to the finish line.

A couple of things.

1) My friend did get into the ear of the candidate on these topics and Youngkin did run on these non-partisan, bread-and-butter issues. So I'm going to personally take credit for V Day. :)

2) Conservative media (e.g., Daily Wire) was instrumental in publicizing a number of issues within the public schools (trans issues, race essentialism, child pornography) that inflamed passions and drove huge GOP turnout.

3) Biden administration is wildly unpopular, which is just unnecessary. Biden could be at 60-65% approval rating today had he come in and governed as a moderate; instead, he's allowed 30-year-old far-left Ivy League graduates to run his administration. It's just baffling to me. And the result is Republicans are going to do well in state and local elections (e.g., Republicans overwhelmingly won 2021 schoolboard elections, Supreme Court seat (in PA), GOP took back Virginia House of Delegates).

Except polls have shown the majority of West Virginians support Build Back Better.

Better infrastructure, tax cuts for families, child care, and lower prescription drug prices are policies that the majority of Democrats and Republicans support.

Giving Bezos another tax cut (right now he pays less in taxes than me, thanks Trump!) is a terribly unpopular idea, that’s why they need to latch onto the culture wars angle.

It’s amazing how Virginia picked grievance about critical race theory, which isn’t even taught in Virginia, over the preventable deaths of hundreds of thousands and the attempts by the GOP to move us away from a democracy.

Democrats need to figure out how to deal with the culture war attacks.  Gutting healthcare and giving Bezos tax cuts are extremely unpopular policies, but republicans keep winning and winning with the culture war.  Democrats need to move away from certain racial politics that are not held by the majority of Americans

I’m personally a libertarian and believe that it should be a choice, but I also don’t think that governors have much real power to affect change against abortion (especially in a lean blue state). Since it’s mostly the Supreme Court anyways that controls the issue (unless you’re Greg Abbott…), I think statewide elections should be much more focused on economics and day-to-day issues

The issue is not about choice specifically.  It is about who should have a say.  Why does a criminal get double murder charges if they kill a pregnant woman but that same pregnant woman can kill her child with zero legal consequence?  There are tons of basic contradictions in the legal system surrounding abortion.

Looks like you're finally coming around.  Conservatives' fight tooth and nail to make Zuckerberg and Dorsey richer even though they censor their base.  Doesn't make sense at all to me.

No, I would take the culture war bull in a china shop all day every day over the RINOs who support foreign wars and wasting tax money on shit that will never work.  Sure the tax policies are great but you can get those with any GOP candidate.

Normie parents getting a taste of how liberals actually are is amazing. Especially the media. They employed the usual liberal tactics: first thing, deny. First, CRT didn't even exist. Then it existed but wasn't taught. Then was taught (actually done more than taught) but was actually just history so it was a good thing to teach it. All combined with a barrage of slander, harassment, humiliation.

Garland even sent the Gestapo. Despicable people.  Same tactics for pretty much everything, but especially race&immigration. Never an inch of truth.

Never discuss with dishonest scumbags.

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

The Gestapo?  Really?  US law enforcement is the same as the Nazi secret police, especially on race?

Mate, your entire agenda is based on blaming cis-het straight white males for everything and excluding them from society. Swap that with Jews and you have Hitler. It's a fair comparison

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

Yeah, US federal law enforcement are pretty despicable people who routinely get away with extrajudicial murder, regularly violate the constitution with warrantless search & seizure, and are generally unaccountable. Not to mention that throughout their history they've been a highly politicized group of thugs, from going after "communists" in the 1950s to "white nationalists" today. The very foundation of the FBI going back to J. Edgar Hoover is rotten to the core.

I'm all for defunding the police if it includes the FBI, DEA, ATF...

As hard as it is to believe, our intelligence agencies are even more awful.

I voted in this election and I am from Fairfax county. I am not into politics but this was a pretty important election. Some of you may not know this but Virginia is home to the first and second richest counties in the country. Why its important is because those counties are racially diverse with immigrant backgrounds. Terry had Biden come out and help with his campaign, whereas Youngkin refused Trump's support. Youngkin was able to get enough of that wealthier immigrant population to vote for him due to his business policies. He got a higher % and was then able to flip the state red. The GOP needs to get their message across to middle-class and upper-middle class immigrants. This is going to be the voter base that pushes them over. If they keep focusing on Farmer Joe with his MAGA hat they will continue losing. Immigrants that work hard and earn a decent living dont give a shit about critical race theory or abortion, they come from countries where govts tend to be corrupt. They want a govt that supports capitalism and free market. When I went to go vote, it was incredible how many asians, indians, etc. were coming to support Youngkin in this.

Asians definitely care about race issues. One of the major issues of the campaign in Northern Virginia was the Democrats push to remove Asians, by default, from Thomas Jefferson High School (for those who don't know, that's a magnet school--one of the nation's top). The Democrats' strategy has been to go all-in on the black vote; that works so long as you keep the other non-white races in your corner.

Yes I was referring to critical race theory being taught in schools. I meant that asians dont a give a shit about their kids learning "white people are bad". They want their kids to learn math, science, etc. As for affirmative action, yea the dems have been screwing themselves over by putting quotas on schools for races. The funny thing is that Fairfax and Loudoun dont even have that big of a black population.

But the media told me that the Republican agenda is oppressive to people of color, including immigrants.

So, maybe this means that the typical GOP strategy of "blaming the media" isn't correct?  That perhaps the media is right when it calls Trump supporters bigots, and now we have non-Trump Republicans breaking with Trump because they don't like the association?  Seems to me you can't have this both ways - either the media is all powerful and has huge liberal portions of the country zombified by it's bullshit narrative, or liberals form their own opinions based on a variety of facts and value systems, the results of which vary depending on who they are voting for?

Why should the Gop betray its most loyal voters and become a light copycat of woke idiots? Bigots like Joe the farmer build the country that immigrants couldn't in their country of origin. There's more to building a cohese and prosperous society than a college degree

Dems have plenty of reasons to blame themselves for losing this race, but man, it's sure hard to win against the complete strangulation the right wing propaganda media has over its gullible voters:

If you haven't seen it yet, here's a video of a Virginia voter saying Critical Race Theory is his number one voting issue, while simultaneously admitting he has no idea what CRT is.

Well right, Virginia is a blue state. Virginia isn't purple; it's definitely on the blue scale. Until yesterday, D governor, D Lt gov, D AG, both US Sens D, Va House and Senate D, voted D for president since 2008 (4 election cycles). So yeah, you have to run a perfect campaign to win in a blue state.

Array

Virginia elected a majority-GOP legislature every session for ten straight (20 years).  And often by wide margins.

I understand the desire to play up a win by a GOP candidate in a purple state, which has been rare these last 4 years, but calling Virginia a "blue state" is wrong, or at least only looks at one facet of the question.  It's a purple state that has become more Democratic over the last decade.  Republicans probably would have won the 2013 election if that Libertarian guy whose name I forget hadn't run.  And in checking, the GOP candidate won like 60% of the vote in 2009.  Democrats won with like 47% of the vote in 2013 and 54% in 2017.  Those are not "mandate" numbers, at all.  Those are numbers you'd see in a purple state - which Virginia is.

Asian American Republican who’s lived in Virginia for all of my 21 years on this planet and goes to school in state. Honestly I don’t think the opposing party wins in Virginia after election year narrative is valid anymore. It’s a blue state now, not Biden +5, Biden +10. We’ve seen a sea change in the states politics in last 12 years, McDonnells election in 2009 was the anomaly and precursor to 2010 nationwide rout of dems. Youngkins the perfect candidate for Virginia and by focusing so much on education, which is an incredibly important issue in a state which cares more about it than almost any other, he paved the path to his success. Lots of suburban voters and immigrants and Asian Americans flipping towards youngkin too, they don’t want CRT and meritless admissions to magnet schools. People don’t want the teacher unions shutting down schools (we all know it’s because they’re lazy not because of COVID) and ultrawoke schooling. Freaking hate the super woke Asians who want UC Berkeley to consider race in admissions and want to kneecap our own people while black people kill our Asian seniors in SF and NY. Just want to be judged by the content of my character and not be discriminated against because of my race from either side, my parents came to this country with nothing and both them and me worked our asses off the build the lives that we have. Wokeism is destroying this country.

Also maybe the problem is the number of seats. Maybe the best education institutions in the world shouldn’t be exclusive luxury birkin bags to signify social class and wealth and to promote whatever woke agenda the hyper radical admission officers want to push? Maybe, just maybe, top public and private institutions should increase the number of seats, which would help whites, Asians, URMs and everyone?

Just want to be judged by the content of my character and not be discriminated against because of my race from either side, my parents came to this country with nothing and both them and me worked our asses off the build the lives that we have. Wokeism is destroying this country.

Actually, it sounds like you want to be judged on the content of your parent's character.  What does their success have to do with you?

I mean no insult to your parents, or to you necessarily, I'm just pointing out that even in an angry screed about how you aren't able to get your due (and what is that?  life isn't fair), you can't help but justify your points with a pointed reference to something that has nothing to do with you, that has nothing to do with what you "deserve", etc.  I'm sure all the black folks who are living on easy street because "CRT" is being "taught" in schools could tell you something about how life isn't fair, and you don't always get what you deserve.

Thank fuck its not some hillbilly pandering maga retard like Texas and Florida

I think Youngkin will do great

I don’t think a q anon Republican could win Virginia. He’s the perfect candidate for the state. Too bad there aren’t consecutive terms in Virginia

I mean, I will say it's nice to see a non-Trump candidate get some votes from the right, indicates a potential return to sanity.  Though I'm a little dismayed former President Trump and his cronies aren't committed to their claims on electoral security and refuse to call for an audit.

And while I didn't follow too closely, his platform seemed to be the typical GOP one (pre-Trump) - unsubstantiated racial dog whistles meant to rile up the base and lots of goodies and tax freebies which they'll force subsequent liberal governors to pay for.

PEarbitrage

I love how the right has "racist dog whistles" while the left has open racism.  It almost boggles the mind that the supposed dog whistles are the issue, not the open racism on the other side.

The problem is that this country is openly hostile to black folks, not white ones. "Racism" against white people involves memes and a small number of people blaming black folks for not getting into university/a job opening.  "Racism" against black people involves substantially harsher jail sentences, being murdered by the police, and being unable to get mortgages.

I'm not sitting here and saying that black people can't be racist, or that in some rare instances they're given advantages over others.  But anyone complaining about that is ignoring that the massive gaps in economic, social, educational, etc performance between white folks and black folks is entirely due to the fact that for the vast majority of the history of this country, black people were either second class citizens or literal property.

"Unsubstantiated racial dog whistles" i.e. opposition to insane anti-white racial hatred being taught in grade schools lol. His message resonated because parents knew EXACTLY what sort of absurd woke garbage he was highlighting. The exact same people who agreed with him on this issue had JUST voted for Biden and House Democrats a year ago. They voted for Jason Miyares (Cuban) and Winsome Sears (black) in the same election. The Democrat party is the anti-white party. Chris Rufo found a clever way to spread that fact without being as crass as Trump, and Youngkin grabbed the idea and ran with it to great effect.

That said, I suppose agitating against white people is in your nature, so to speak. (That was a substantiated dog whistle)

When the assumption is that white people should have power and privilege, then yes, I suppose advocating for equality is "anti-white".

I mean, ignoring the obvious fact that if we ask everyone who hates "Critical Race Theory" what it means, most won't know and the rest will give wildly divergent answers, doesn't it strike anyone as funny that no one ever really interviews black or hispanic folks and asks them about they think about how issues surrounding "race" and bigotry are taught in schools?  The default is that whatever is being taught has some innate educational superiority, merely because it's what has always been taught. Which is obviously wrong on its face!

Critical Race Theory is just a nice vague term onto which people can project all their fears about social changes and the shifting nature of ethnic relations in this country.  As usual, no substance, just appealing to fear.

Per exit polls, Terry actually won a larger share of Latino and Asian voters than Biden did (in before "I am actually an Asian/Latino Republican...., sure dude nobody is saying you dont exist, for example only 97% not 100% of the Navajo Nation in AZ voted for Biden in 2020, it happens) and he held steady with Black voters. Terry could have done better with whites and there was low democratic turnout amongst their base and in the cities.
