Global Warming: Best Spots to Be in 40 Years

With ocean levels rising (oil rigs raising their rigs 8 feet) and it getting warmer, where would you set up home base for the foreseeable future? Florida is sunk. Cali is a desert. I'm thinking Chicago and Calorado are going to be good spots. Outside of the U.S., I'm considering moving to the Philippines in the mountains. My wife has family there, it's cool in the mountains, and you can live like kings on a U.S. income.

What's your game plan? Or are you doing the nomad thing, ready to move at the drop of a dime, home is where the heart is etc?

I don't know what macro aggression is and don't care to. Why would I care about hoodlums shooting each other? The less of them the better. Do you even live in Chicago?

I'm ok with hoodlums shooting at each other until some 7 year old girl runs out in the street to save her Barbie.

We need to teach these people better aim, and we need to bring back the death penalty in IL. It should apply to ANYONE who fires a weapon in a gang shootout where a kid under 10 dies.

Gangs used to try to keep kids and civilians out of it. This should provide both sides an effective incentive to continue doing so, especially with gunshot residue tests.

Black lives matter, and innocent black lives matter even more.

The thing people forget about climate change investments is that we will begin to see the economic affects long before the full environmental affects become apparent: Economic markets will begin pricing in the likely damages as the environmental consequences become more physically apparent.

I think Ackman was making this trade when he bought the penthouse at One57, so this trade is either doomed for failure or genius depending on your feelings for him. I heard the rationale is that you will move the NYC Yacht Club to the peasants' condos on the 8th floor for waterfront views and easy access to your boat.

Australia.

I love Australia, but isn't it already hot and getting hotter? Please tell me I'm wrong. Also, thoughts on New Zealand, Greenland, and Ireland?

Global warming is not the only environmental threat out there, there are also earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and New Zealand is situated perfectly on the ring of fire .

Ireland has some of the best psychiatric institutions in Europe and depression seems epidemic. Madness will get to you before any sun burn.

Greenland ammm interesting I might consider that .

Everywhere is getting hotter on average (average global temperatures are increasing) -- that's the point of climate change.

Australia is a HUGE country. Although every area experiences hot days in the summer, the climate becomes colder and wetter as you travel south: http://www.yourhome.gov.au/introduction/australian-climate-zones

If the daily heat is your biggest concern, then you're probably better off looking at areas that are coldest on average, since, even with higher average temperatures, those areas will still remain relatively colder. But don't forget that there are many other factors to consider: The affect of rising sea levels and ocean acidification; scarcity of freshwater and agriculture; etc. For instance, Switzerland may initially seem like a good choice but I'm not sure how the local environment is going to change as their glacial mountains continue melting.

it was 55 degrees today...in pretty much December, what more do you want? Personally I think right now is a great balance, its not 120 degrees in the summer, and its not 20 degrees in the winter

you know that the polar caps are melting in Mars too? that maybe it's b/c of the sun and not what al gore says. And obviously there are no SUV's on Mars. We poison lakes, create smog, acid rain, deforestation, extinction of species, on and on, but yet people think we cannot change the climate lol.

Major companies and insurance firms believe in climate change. I believe the people who are voting with their dollars.

Human beings effect everything. It is what we do. We 100% are effecting the climate. Whether it is bad or fundamentally wrong, that is up for debate. All I know is that it is happening and it would be naive to think otherwise.

I just know this is going to turn into a bitchy thread. People to hate climate change.

I don't believe in climate change as a man-made phenomenon because they haven't scientifically proven it.

Do I think our climate may be changing? Sure. I just don't feel like anyone has proven it yet. If you're worried about gw/cc, you shouldn't be promoting it as such. The Democrats fucked the cause by making it a political issue. Every time the government is brought in to force people to do something, there is going to be massive resistance. Where the liberals could've spent billions of dollars on educating the people, they chose to spend it on lobbyists in Washington.

So, you all might blame the Republicans/conservatives, well fuck that. I blame the Democrats. The more you try and control someone or a group of people, the more they are going to slip away and push back.

Global warming is a fact. The debate is whether it is man-made or not. It is honestly a stupid issue. Promoting energy efficiency and environmental sustainability is economically smart as well. My guess is that special interest groups are behind the whole thing. You can never make an environmentalist happy, and you need to keep the coal lobby happy.

End times theorists have occurred at every period in history. Its a perennial fact of human nature. Examples included how jews thought their messiah would come during the holocaust, and during some of the more barbaric periods BC and during the rise in prominence of Christ, and in the belief of scientists in the 70's that the world was actually cooling and that the gulf stream would stop flowing and that europe would freeze over.

I dont think it would even be a problem if global warming happened - during the earlier periods in history, fruit and palm trees grew in antarctica. If anything, it would be a blessing to have a warmer world - warmth just basically meaning more life really.

“...all truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” - Schopenhauer

I think climate change is mainly a caused by the Earth naturally and carbon emissions may contribute to it. doubt it is a huge deal if we reduce carbon emissions- but if you look at what carbon emissions come from in the LR it is a smart thing to do. Changing from a limited to an unlimited resource is economically beneficial, as is energy independence. Fossil fuels are also not clean burning or efficient- so pollutants are released into the atmosphere- harming public health. I think renewables should be pursued for the end game where fossil fuels are too hard to come by to make them economically feasible anymore. That said, I definitely am opposed to it being done so in a punitive way- like extra taxes on fossil fuels.

Reality hits you hard, bro...

I'm not a huge fan of the global warming panic. Global climate changes are somewhat beyond the control of humans in most aspects.

However

I'm not a fan of the assholes that dump poison into the air I breath and water I drink. Polluters fail as humans.

duff: thanks for the link, I'll take a look at it.

Sorry, I shouldn't have said those that believe it are happening, I meant those who believe it is caused by man. I guess what I was really looking for was answers to the questions I posed. As someone who believes man is causing global warming and think we need to do something about it, how do the questions I asked affect things, if they affect things? Should somebody else take over in leading climate change research? Should someone else lead the fight for climate change (this is in reference to Al Gore)?

The thing is, if it's truly happening and it's being caused by us, we need to know like yesterday. And the fact that these scientists are being pretty shady about the way they present themselves and their information to us scares the hell out of me. I'm a "skeptic", but the reason I'm a skeptic is because I want to know the truth. Whenever I see Al Gore's face associated with something like climate change, I just discount it. I'm sorry, but I don't have any trust in that man or belief that he is trying to do good for the world. The climategate-type emails that get released do the same thing. How the hell am I, someone who wants to know what is actually happening, supposed to believe someone who has explicitly said they're manipulating information?

I think it's important that we get this figured out stat, whether it actually is or is not happening because of us. I've talked to a lot of people who think it is happening, and the vast majority of them don't help the cause either. I'm going to sum up the responses I've gotten, not including this thread. They all pretty much revolve around:

1) You don't believe in climate change? You're an idiot. (me: why?) Because if you don't know that climate change is happening, you're an idiot. ^^^ I've actually gotten this response (or something like it) a lot. If I press them on what they know about it, they usually say something like, "it's getting hotter and we're making more greenhouse gasses." Most of the time, though, it comes down to them saying "it's science" or something like it.

2) You must be a Republican person laughs

3) Getting yelled at for not caring about the environment

4) Actual discussion ^^^Rarest of the 4, probably only happened three or four times. Im not real big on science so I just try and have these people do what I'm asking you guys for here. They can't really give me a good answer on why I should trust the information these people who have been proven to be lying to us give us.

So, yea, just trying to get some more reasoning into the open as to why I'm so skeptical about all of this.

"You stop being an asshole when it sucks to be you." -IlliniProgrammer "Your grammar made me wish I'd been aborted." -happypantsmcgee

Realize also that even if it's a real problem, people tend to wait until it's a crisis before dealing with it. The average IQ of the human race is probably retarded. This doesn't help, but there's your answer.

The problem isn't just that the average human is retarded, it's that the average human is an idiot but also thinks he's smart :P

Honestly, I don't think anyone here has the credentials to make judgments on peer-reviewed academic scientific papers, regardless of shadiness of scientists, etc. We can choose not to believe in it until there is more sound proof and all of the climategate stuff is sorted out (I'm not sure if it has yet, correct me if I'm wrong. I know for a fact that climategate 1.0 stuff was shown to be scientifically insignificant to the conclusions and blown way out of proportion. Haven't read much about 2.0), but we can't do what a lot of people do and say the man made thing is definitely a myth and that it's definitely natural. I consider myself pretty in touch with modern science. I've taken some advanced classes/taught myself a lot and can keep up with a lot of science journals, but I still really don't know where I stand. The scientific consensus DOES still seem to be that global warming is manmade, so I wanna say I believe it too, but because of these suspicions I wanna wait until these new suspicions are proven to be negligible or non-negligible.

Assuming you believe that it's happening, then I would say that glacial ice melting is probably the best evidence of climate change. Most of this occurs in Antarctica or the North pole. Both of which are in BFE. For their temperatures to be effected, I believe the whole world MUST be heating up. It's also telling how quickly that change started to occur. The science behind why it is believed humans caused it is pretty basic. We put co2 into the atmosphere. There aren't enough plants to consume that co2, so it stays there. Co2 prevents heat from escaping the earth so the temperature rises.

CRE:

What kind of timeframe are we talking here? Some of y'all making predictions that'll take hundreds, if not thousands, of years

If the purpose of this thread was to discuss investments to take advantage of or protect against the affects of climate change, then I'm assuming we'd be having a more short-term discussion about certain vulnerable geographies, etc. However, it seems that this was meant to be more of a fun, hypothetical discussion of what people should do when/if climate change becomes globally catastrophic.

Excluding specific vulnerable geographies, 40 years is too soon for catastrophic consequences to become apparent; for that, it'll take centuries.
