GOAT of GOATS MJ or TB?

Jordan vs Brady. Who’s the ultimate G.O.A.T?

After watching the Eagles all season, I have to think coaching plays a very large role in a team’s success, because Carson to Foles seemed like it would be a big trade off, yet they ended in the same place as expected.

You could say something similar about Phil Jackson and MJ to Phil and Kobe, except that basketball players have much greater control over the direction of their careers by playing both sides of the ball and due to the fact that basketball is faster paced and independent of coaching schemes on many plays.

Idk, what do you guys think? Who’s the ultimate GOAT?

I think if you just look at the number of players that go into a winning football team versus a winning basketball team, putting Tom Brady in the category of greatest sportsman of all time isn't a fair comparison to other athletes. it doesn't give belichick the credit he deserves, nor the Pats defenses.

also, I'll state the obvious and say they're different sports. just like we can't say Brady is the greatest football player of all time and compare him to Lawrence Taylor or Jerry Rice because they play different positions, we can't say Brady is the ultimate GOAT, it's apples to oranges.

MJ wouldn't have been MJ without scottie and phil jackson, Brady wouldn't be the best QB to ever play the game without belichick, a great defense, and usually good O-lines. at the same time, you couldn't put john stockton on the bulls and expect the same result just like I don't think you could put eli manning on the pats and expect him to be on his way to 6 rings.

interesting factoid: the NFC East versus the AFC East in Super Bowls is 8-2 since 1970, only 2 games the AFC East has beaten the NFC East are Pats over Eagles and Dolphins over Skins

When it comes to the debate of the ultimate GOAT across sports, I don't think Brady belongs in the discussion (I am a huge Brady fan, btw) mainly for two reasons:

  1. Football is not a global sport. It's only played in the US and even though the Super Bowl is a mega event broadcasted all over the world, the large majority of the world's population knows nothing about the sport and likely doesn't even know who Tom Brady is. In this discussion, that has to count.

  2. Brady is not the undisputed GOAT in his sport. Even though I personally consider him to be, and probably the majority of fans now does, it's nowhere near MJ's dominance in that regard.

Actually, in my opinion, the only athlete that could rival with MJ for ultimate GOAT (if your goal is to find the one across all sports) is Federer

Federer is an excellent name, yes. I just can't fathom how he somehow revived his career back to elite levels. All time legend in all cases.

I thought for the longest of times that Tiger would be there. A decade ago it seemed like it was only inevitable that he would have the undisputed majors records, but the slew of back injuries and off the field stuff permanently damaged what was a truly transcendent career in my view.

There's a closer meaning to my user name. Try reading it quickly. Perhaps you will then understand ;P

It has been truly incredible to witness him come back to the top. And it has also been a blessing to Tennis itself (especially with Nadal surging back at the same time), because it makes for a great 2 years for fans before the best players of the new generation are ready to take the top (Thiem, Zverev, Kyrgios maybe) and Djoko and Murray are a long way from coming back. If Brady is impressive at 40, what to say about Federer at 37... just unbelievable. I just want to see him win another Roland Garros (imagine against Nadal) and then he can retire. Or not, even better.

Actually, there was a pretty interest article a few months ago about how Federer, unlike so many other superstars in the past and in all sports, seemed to "accept" his apparent decline and realized that being consistently in the top 4, even if no longer number 1 was still worth it. The argument is that he was able to remain happy with the game, avoid frustration, and ultimately allowed him to improve once again. We always like to see our stars leave on top and avoid fading away, so it was a pretty interesting counter-point to that

Ruth.

Baseball has the best stats of any sport. Replacing a league average right fielder with his best season would have turned an 81 win team into a 92.5 win team (that was actually assuming a 156 game season it would be a higher WAA for 162) Given that the best teams lose 1/3 of games, and the worst lose 1/3 (roughly) that is a seismic shift. He sustained similar stats for well over a decade, and changed the sport.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
