forget about this internship. Do an IBD internship in the shittiest bank in the world before anything in ops.
Yeah, let me give you a rundown on ops. You will be transferring numbers from one spreadsheet to the other, updating trader/client balances, reconcilling them. You will learn a lot, but not in the front office way. On the other hand, the job is very steady, very rarely more than 50 hours a week. So if you want a good work/life balance, go there, if you want to become a i-banking/investment professional, you won't become one going through operations.

this isn't something i would want to do long term though i think it would be dumb to not show up for the interview.
in the long run i would like to do equity research or fixed income research, or maybe something in fixed income more broadly (or maybe also economic consulting). this isn't a first choice, though i go to a non-target (though pretty well respected) school so i feel like i should take advantage of the interview.
of course, go to the interview. What I am saying is, there are plenty of summer positions that are probably available to you that are more attractive for your career development than operations at a bank.
If it's not something you want to do long term, then absolutely try to avoid it for the summer.

Hi guys. I know how everyone here feels about this division and that it is not exactly respected here. However for a guy who was lucky to get a place at university, I do not feel it is a bad place and I if I get it, I intend to use it as a stepping stone to front office. Anyway I have a first round interview here and I was wondering if anyone knows what questions to expect? Also the interview invite does not mention anything about tests but reading stuff online it seems some people were subjected to them. So does anyone know if their will be tests or not? Thanks

For operations, many times they will ask you in about your proficiency in Excel. Generally the questions tend to be mostly fit/behavior, though they may ask you about current events or what you know about the firm.
It is also important to note that a lot of operation interviewers are looking for people to stay within operations and not for people to jump to front office. Although maybe no one wants to stay in operations forever, you should come across as you do and you have no other plans to go to IBD or S&T.
GS Operations Internship Worth It? (Originally Posted: 02/18/2012)
I'm currently waiting to begin a 10 month internship with MSSB doing wealth management.
I was also just extended an offer for an operations summer analyst internship with GS in SLC.
Is the GS position worth it if I want to:
1) Get into I-Banking after graduating in May 2013?
2) Eventually get an MBA from a top business school?
I'll continue to apply for more front office positions with boutique I-Banks.
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated!
A janitorial position at GS helps get into IB.
In all seriousness, the GS name even though it's in SLC, will be good for you.
Once you get into OPS, there is no going back.
this is a retarded comment. i would agree if you were talking full time, but because it is for an internship theres nothing that you should be worried about at all. get the best job you can and don't look back. i would have loved to have GS ops on my resume as a sophomore. it will be an awesome experience
Ops will only do you harm if you are doing it FT. As of now, for your sophomore year internship, it'll be great.

So does an Ops Internship > PWM Internship for Sophomore SA? Because Im guessing Smith Barney would be a nice name on the resume also?
If the GS Ops position were in New York I think it would be a slightly harder choice, but I would take MSSB PWM internship.
