What GS team would you choose as a SA?
Hi Monkeys, as you may know, GS SA can choose two teams within IB for their 2 summer rotations. What would your recommendations be based on team culture, prestige, WLB, etc? They normally advise to do 1 rotation in a product group and 1 in an industry team, but I might be more interested to do both with industry coverage teams. Appreciate your thoughts/insights
Go for FIG, the leadership team sent a very generous care package to the analysts recently!
I'd personally choose C&R
Why is that? Just based on personal interests?
That and it has a lot of alumni from my schooo
What do they tell you in terms of hours and team culture?
Are you interested at all in the financing group? Maybe check out LevFin or ECM then. Pay is the same (or even better) than in IBD with significantly better hours. Exits are of course a different story (LevFin still decent). So if you are dead set on leaving then I would stay away. Alternatively you can always move into classic IBD after your two analyst years. By that time at least half of the analyst class in the classic teams will be gone so you can go into any team you would like.
I'd personally advise you to rotate into two M&A teams (yes it's possible although they would like you to choose a financing team as well) and choose based on cultural fit and interest - learning experience in classic teams is the best / most applicable and provides you with the broadest exit options. You might think you want to be career banker, and sorry to be that guy, but trust me you don't.
Most popular team (formerly known as the "lifestyle team"): Consumer & Retail (used to also cover Healthcare which is now a separate team). Certainly a good team although it has become sweatier (after all it's GS...).
Sweatiest teams but also historically best for exits: TMT and Industrials.
Lots of turnover here for obvious reasons. TMT if you want to work on some of the the "sexier" transactions, Industrials if you want to maximize transactional exposure (lots of sponsor sell-sides).
FIG, NatRes, RE would only do if you have an interest in that specific field as exits will likely be a tad more limited. NatRes good choice if you want to do infrastructure investing. You can get good technical exposure in infra (infra models are a huge pain).
RE supposed to have decent lifestyle.
FIG is organized on geo coverage basis and lifestyle can be vastly different within. Rather niche so only do it if you are really interested.
