good businessweek article on tips with recruiting
http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_2…
Mentions a company that helps with resume/cover letters and general recruiting help:
'Meanwhile, she'll be paid up to $50 an hour to advise other undergraduates on navigating the choppy recruiting waters. She works with a company called Higher Recruiting started last year by students who met at the New York private high school Horace Mann and since have worked at various Wall Street banks. With 32 student consultants serving undergrads on more than 20 campuses, Higher Recruiting pitches itself to those who fear that their career services departments may not be savvy or aggressive enough.'
yeah i just checked out the website, www.higherrecruiting.com they have some tips and good advice given on their website. they seem pretty professional and know their stuff.
hmmm....I have a hard-time believing it's actually like that especially with the groups and clubs and everything. From what I see, the only things that really end up mattering are GPA and Work Experience. The only thing I've noticed clubs being good for is giving me free dinners and drinks at high-class restaurants which companies pay for.
Agree with Warhawk on clubs being futile for any classification less than that of a director. If you are a director or hold a leadership position in a club, then I guess it's a pretty good thing, because more often than not, people have asked me about my leadership positions in clubs and groups. I'm not sure but perhaps someone who has experience in recruiting interns can comment? Dosk17, do you perceive club leadership experience an important part of a persons total package?
are there any other firms like "higher recruiting" that help with the recruiting process?
higherrecruiting is the only one i've come across. I actually spoke to one of their consultants. They seem very knowledgeable about the whole process and very friendly with questions. I'm going to send my resume for them to make over.
I think its only good to talk about in interviews and to show you didn't just study all day long. But if you have work experience to talk about instead I don't see much point or benefit. If any analysts involved in the recruiting process disagree, please correct.
i feel like a bunch of people from this board including myself ought to start up our own company like this, and offer our services for only $40 an hour...obviously there is a market for this type of stuff
To be honest, there's only so much you can do to a resume. If you don't have a strong work experience and a good GPA, you're fighting an uphill battle in this market regardless of how your cover letter or resume reads.
Great companies will get sold to an acquirer even with a crappy looking CIM, but a great looking CIM never makes up for a crappy company.
I haven't looked at any of these sites yet, but the only thing I can think they can offer of value would be a network of contacts.
I agree....while my resume had a lot of improvements and changes, I got all of that help through alumni and my network. Having just gone through SA recruiting, unless you go to an ultra target, your network is really your best bet, and if you have a good network, those guys should be looking at your resume first.
while one is somewhat limited with one's experiences and credentials, i feel there are many ways to market yourself to both recruiter and your alumni network - like how do you ask for a job, what do you do to make them more interested in helping you etc.
like a few months ago, i just sent my resume via email to a few alumni...that didn't work out so well. I think there are more effective ways to get your message and case across...or at least that's what the guys at higherrecruiting was telling me.
I definately have used alumni and they are extraordinary resources.
this article just proves that competition is stiff.
