Google Business Solutions Role vs Microsoft Marketing vs Finance...for VC Exit?

Hey everyone,

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on the following.

I have an internship offer with Google's business solutions group, in which I will work with advertisers and publishers on Double Click.

I'd like to be in VC or PE in the long run.

I'm a junior in Europe but I plan to move to the US after graduation.

Would this role at GOOG set me up well for the Silicon Valley VC scene or should I consider something else after graduating?

I'm interested in marketing and strategy and have offers from GS Asset Management and will recruit for FB marketing division.

Thanks!

VC associate 13, thank you for your response.

I would be in Google's sales team (acquiring new clients). PM is a role that requires an engineering background and I don't have that. What are the VC feeder roles? I thought that simply working at a known tech firm or a startup would suffice but would you point to any roles in particular?

I really don't want to do banking...If I can get PE or VC in CA after I graduate (even if it's a smaller firm) should I take it or should I join a startup/tech? Ah, too many options.

What was your background?

Is joining Uber or Dropbox not recommended anymore? (I have offers for a BizOps type role @ 1 of them)

They are likely too big now for you to have a meaningful product or strategy role so you need to focus earlier stage. That said, they'd be fine places to start, and you could transition to something earlier stage after cutting your teeth.

Honestly you have nothing to lose by going to GOOG (great brand name) with a potential to move laterally within the organization. Don't forget about company culture and your opportunity to make lots of great friends and good times at a young culture versus VC with bunch of old folks.

Getting into a VC at this stage will be all hustle and luck at this point. Start meeting with people.
