Grad school +work
Hi guys. I came across an interesting program. An international business MA program. THe program is not in the US. According to the site, there are classes 3 times a week, and they are evening classes. They help you secure an internship/work arrangements. The tuition isn't much at all. Would this be a good idea? I mean obviously depending on the prestige of this program(not sure yet). Would a bank have someone work FT while they do MA like this?
What role are you talking about when you say bank? If you mean IB, I think not. Maybe ops or something.
It depends if it's a commercial or investment bank. IBank is unlikely to let you work full time and do the MA because day has 24 hours and they will expect you to be between 10-14 hours at work, so there is no space for studying for MA.
Well, then maybe like more of an off-cycle internship? I am not sure. Most days I think they would let you work full days.
What do you mean "full day?" If you work in investment banking full-time you won't be able to study alongside it. Maybe something like an off-cycle internship would work, but that would be handled on a case by case basis only. Can't really say whether it would or wouldn't work.
Understood. Do you think a bank would be open to that type of case by case work? University says the help secure working arrangements as well.
I think it depends a whole lot on the quality/reputation of the school/degree. I am quite skeptical that something like that would work for an investment banking internship. Are you trying to work in that country full-time? If you're not a permanent resident/citizen of that country, visa issues could arise also.
Right. Yeah, I'm not a permanent citizen. I could apply for some permits or something, or maybe this university somehow hooks it up. I'm just saying.. maybe it would be better exit opps, plus a helluva lot more language/international exposure.
If you're not a citizen you need a CPT or OPT. CPT during the academic year. You pay your school for an internship for credit and CPT for a year after you graduate. I've done CPT myself and it sucks to pay school to be able to work but it's the only way to work legally while at school.
