Grades
I need some advice in terms of GPA. In my freshman year, I messed up big time and ended up with a 2.6 (family and personal issue) within a year I have made it a 3.1 (rising junior). Depside my GPA I have been practicing modeling and started networking with professionals, I am doing a lot to prepare myself but I was wondering, is there an even a possibility I may end up with an interview. I know I am competing with people with 3.9, 3.8, is there even a possibility I might even get an IB interview this summer for next year summer internship. need a little advice, I go to a business school in the city but not a target school.
If your school has any grade replacement/retake policies you might be able to replace some of those low grades. SA 2021 recruiting is happening right now so your 3.1 is what it is, but replace what you can if you do a 5th year or FT recruiting.
There's always a possibility, with a 3.1 and nontarget it's an uphill battle and you need a lot of networking. Usually being in the city is helpful, but no one is doing coffee chats right now.
Thank you! my school doesn't offer retake policies so my best bet is to prepare, network and hope for the best while working on my GPA. I would have a better chance going for a FT offer with a higher gpa or moving from BO TO FO or WM to IB later on. Thanks
WM to IB definitely or corporate finance/FP&A at a F500 to IB. BO to IB is a difficult transition
this GPA thing is truly pain in the ass. I have the same problem too and now it's getting worse: thanks to covid-19, stable geniuses in my country are implementing a ridiculous system that would halt any progress for at least 2 semesters. it's literally hell.
but if you're in a place where you can network, you still have a decent chance. a youtuber who makes videos on IB has made this point before: heavy networking could make your GPA irrelevant. make sure you also improve your skillset to the fullest.
sincerely, I wish you the best of luck
Thank you for your advice. I got into the networking game late and started networking recently and right now I am taking the time to learn the tehcinal skills through online courses. Thank you!
Network hard enough and GPA becomes irrelevant. According to the retards on this website, I had a horrible profile to make it into IB and a 'low chance' to break in yet I recently got an offer and managed to get interviews at EBs being from a non-target with no connections and no alumni. Network.
Yea i realized that networking is really important, and have recently started networking. In terms of networking what do you think is the best thing to do on a call because I have realized when i get on a call it usally starts with tell about yourselfs and turns into a Q&A (the calls went well) but i feel kind of awkward making it into a Q&A session what would you suggest I can do on a call to have a flow to it. Thank you so much and best of luck to you !
The key here is to let them talk. Most bankers are arrogant (like we will probably end up being) so all they do is talk about themselves, they love it. Bring 5 questions to start off with and then if they quickly answer them bring follow up questions to each of the 5 (embed another question within each one); then you must make sure to let them do most of the talking. Truth be told, they don't care about you and you don't really care about them, you are just there to get the interview, so you really have to 'go with the flow.' I have actually developed really good relationships from this strategy, but typically, in order to not get your hopes too high you have to enter it with this cookie-cutter format, as it works very efficiently. This has helped me pull of interviews at 5 different banks and eventually got me my offer secured at a good IB.
Are you asking at the end if they can push you / send your CV or you just wait for their move? And additionally, do you followup them or it's just one call -> request -> end of connection :D
Always follow up and maintain the connection; even if you do not get an offer or an interview, you have to maintain the relationship. I used to do this based off of future necessity, but eventually found myself developing great relationships through this method, some people I'd even like to call a friend.
Is it possible to develop relationships by phone or these were face-to-face meetings? And additionally, how to you follow-up them? Sending a message 'How are you?' from time to time or sending relevant articles? Do you get often responses for followups? And additionally, how often do you think it's ideally to followup?
