Graduating but have no work experience.

Guys I am going to be graduating in Dec 2010 and I decided that I wanted to do finance and IB banking a bit late into the game.

I got to a very non-target school and I have a 3.3 cum and 3.6 major gpa.

I got a bachelors in economics. However unlike most students who are getting work experience in their sophomore and junior year I was doing other things because I didn't want to go into finacne but medicine. Economics was always an easy major, I focused on pre-med.

But my heart isnt into medicine its into working with models, dealing with financial data in all shapes and forms. I used to want to do finance the whole time I was doing pre-med but I said to myself its not secure, its wishy washy dont go there.

I am 24 years old and I have ZERO direct finance experience. I have few idea's that might work but i need your guys opinion.

  1. Working at an IB firm for me is out of the question, I wont get an internship let alone a FT postion at a BB or boutique. However I can try and cold call boutique firms and try getting a unpaid internship.

  2. I can try and apply for jobs that are FO oriented at F500 companies.

  3. Last resort try and apply for BO/MO jobs at f500 companies.

Then after I have a job and work for a few years try to get into a decent MSF program and then compete for analyst positions with the UG's.

MY first important question is, what kind of job could I get without having any direct financial experience? Wouldn't even entry level FO f500 jobs be out of the question for me?

Secondly if you limited contacts, no alumni network and no decent campus recruiting other than online resources, and cold calling what else could i do?

your relatively old, have no experience, and a bad GPA from a VERY non-target. let's be frank, shit is gonna be tough.

I would network the crap out of every boutique, F500, etc. maybe you strike lucky. i'm talking about cold-calling 9-5 everyday for months.

If I were you I would just persue medicine.... isn't there something like "hospital management" ? there is a lot of money going in and out of hospitals, someone has to run it?

There is a Masters of Health Administration (or some variant of that verbage) which sounds like a decent option and yea, 24 is oldish to be graduating from undergrad since the majority are 22.

Coming from a non-target, as I did, you HAVE to network. Call everyone you know that could possibly have the slightest connection to anything halfway finance related. Going to a F500 isn't a bad route but you might get a shitty position there and have to work your way up a bit, but all and all it's a tough road.

Yeah I dont mind having to work my way up in a F500 to be honest, life is about hard work and I ran away from it while i was younger.

I did look into the MHA degree it seems like a good option, not sure about how much you can earn and what not with it.

Would it be possible for me to get into a MSF program right now?

If I worked at a f500 company for a few years would getting into a good MSF program be more likely?

The MHA thing has decent earning potential, my (former) uncle had an MD and an MBA but when he got an MHA it opened a ton of doors so if you don't mind working in a hospital then its a good way to go.

Ask Anthony any of the MSF questions you might have, he even has a blog solely on that subject.

Trying to get into IB against the odds myself, I don't know if my advice would be great.

I would say maybe work in healthcare for a year or two then go to business school -- but it is key you get a IB internship after your first year. When you finish your MBA, try to focus on a boutique with a strong focus in healthcare.

For all the experienced pros out there, is this plan even feasible?

My opinion is: Work in healthcare and save some money, get an MBA, work your ass off and network to get great grades, contacts and friends, go into IB or consulting (if you want) and try and leverage your experience to get into one of the healthcare, biotech or pharma groups.

I was reading somewhere that getting an MBA means you have to compete with associates at the firm however if you get a MSF though you compete with analysts and UG's and you have a better chance. MBA's cannot come in as analysts or so I am told

Thats why I'm leaning toward a MSF rather than a MBA.

Working in healthcare for a few years is a good option however then getting an MBA later on puts me in the same position as I mentioned above that MBA's compete with associates at IB firms who have more experience.

Thanks guys a lot. I really want to break into this field and I know damn well that I can succeed.

Interning at a Boutique for free the only thing I can think off is cold calling them and simply asking them for chance. Is there any other way guys?

Also Anthony if I get the MSF, will I be able to get an internship on the basis that I am in a MSF program and the OCR at the MSF school will help me out or will I have to rely on my under grad credentials to get an internship.

Thanks again guys
