Greenhill SA Ldn
Currently in a situation where I might have to decide between Greenhill and a top BB for a summer internship in London. GRH has a 6-week-long summer analyst programme.
How highly is Greenhills summer analyst programme regarded in the UK? Out of the boutiques in Europe, I hear that Lazard and Rotschild are doing exceptionally well, and Greenhill less so. Can anyone confirm this? What are the exit ops at GRH compared to those of top BBs? To me, disregarding cultural aspects, it makes sense to choose GS/MS over GRH, but I'd still take GRH over CS/DB/JP.
Would very much appreciate any input people might have on Greenhill in London. I know they are performing very strongly in the US, but I know very little about their European operations.
I'd take most of the London BBs over GHL (not GRH, see ticker), and know guys who have done so and not regretted it. The guys at GHL London seem like good guys to work with, but from what I've heard the experience isn't amazing and deal-flow is comparatively light; also, buy-side recruiting, which is why most people choose GHL in the US, isn't as standardized in London, and you won't have the same sort of process/opportunities as at GHL NY.

Going by that and the fact that the Ldn team is extremely small in comparison to the BBs, I'd say it looks as if the deal-flow is comparatively heavy. Seeing as GHL take on deals of smaller size as well, I assume there is an opportunity to take on a lot of early responsibility as an analyst. In addition, I know for a fact that people in the Ldn office also get staffed on US-deals. Disregarding buy-side recruiting, I'm think it might be a better place to initiate a career in M&A than a BB where there's a lot more senior people ahead in the line to get deal-exposure. Am I wrong?
I'm certainly not saying GHL London is a bad option. It's just much more variable than a good BB will be, and more variable than the NY version of the same bank. GHL London does have decent deal flow, but it is not amazing, and in such a small bank your experience will be very random. Given that you want to be a banker, you are obviously risk-averse, and so the safer option is taking the BB offer you have. Yes, GHL might, possibly, have more upside, but that is the tail end of the distribution, and I think that going to the BB is still the safer option.
