Gronkowski Joins Brady in Tampa Bay

Gronk is going to Tampa Bay and will play with Tom Brady, his former teammate with the Patriots. When Brady signed with Tampa Bay, I was a little perplexed as to why he would want to risk his reputation and play with a weak team like Tampa Bay. Sure, he is getting paid a lot of money but he is already very wealthy and has accomplished more than most QBs who have ever played in the NFL. I wonder if Brady knew that there was a possibility that Gronk might join him in Tampa. I also wonder if there any other players that might be unexpectedly headed to Tampa. I think Antonio Brown wants to join a team.

If nothing else, the Brady signing and now the Gronk trade might generate some enthusiasm for football in Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay is not as weak a team as they seem. They have great receivers, and now a great quarterback. They have a great run defense as well. Their weaknesses the pass couple of seasons have been at QB and pass defense.

If they don’t shore up their pass defense expect a lot of shoot outs next season.

Also, regarding Gronkowski. He retired to take care of his health, a concern about head trauma. If he gets his bell rung, I would imagine he takes weeks off and focuses on a playoff run. If I were considering him for fantasy football I would definitely not pick him early. He could explode, but he’s risky.

Bruce Arians and the majority of the Bucs coaching staff are members at my golf club in Tampa. Rumor was that he told some guys that Gronk and Brady were both coming before TB had even signed so assuming that played a role in why he went to the Bucs.

I am not surprised at all. Brady probably wants to improve his chances of winning. I wonder who else might suddenly end up in Tampa? This kind of reminds me of Lebron, when went to the Cavaliers (could have been the Heat). Lebron was not only star who ended up on the team.

LeBron did it with both the Heat and the Cavaliers. Chris Bosh and LeBron joinined Dwyane Wade in Miami during 2010 free agency. In 2014 free agency, he joined Kyrie Irving on the Cavs who traded for Kevin Love as well (I forget if the Love trade was before or after LeBron's signing). He also went to Los Angeles in 2018 FA knowing that their cap space would be high for 2019-2020.

I’m a fun guy. Obviously I love the game of basketball. I mean there’s more questions you have to ask me in order for me to tell you about myself. I'm not just gonna give you a whole spill... I mean, I don't even know where you're sitting at

Despite my name I'm also a Sixers fan, and I've also been getting interested in other teams as well. The team hasn't been as good as promised, and seeing management squander the assets from The Process or the talent of its star players gets very frustrating. I'll be a Sixers fan for life, but it's hard not to step back and be jealous of front offices like Toronto, Miami, LA, or Milwaukee.

Losing Butler was rough. I know they picked up Horford, but he not as good as Butler Losing Reddick was an issue but other guys like Korkmaz have stepped up to be the shooters. And what can you say about Shake Milton: he has been awesome!

Also, losing Simmons would have been rough if the season continued.

Completely agree. With Butler, I think he provides great secondary ball handling and a lot of intangibles that don't show up on paper, and Redick provided much-needed spacing/shooting for a Simmons-Embiid roster. And they were the first to go. I think an ongoing theme with the Sixers is that they're great at finding and developing talent from the bottom, but they don't do well with making big moves and developing their stars. For instance, Thybulle, Korkmaz, and Milton greatly exceeded my expectations. On the opposite end, Embiid and Simmons are still all stars but haven't grown much, and established players like Horford, Harris, Richardson, etc come and get worse. Not to mention that the team just isn't built well to accommodate its star players.

I agree with you on Embiid but not necessarily on Simmons, who was one of the leaders in steals and assists this year. More importantly, how about his free throws? You have to give Simmons some credit for how he has improved from the line. With Horford, I do not think he was ever a star player. Now he is a good player who is getting up their in years.

I guess with Simmons I have mixed feelings. He has improved defensively by a ton, and this past year he had a DPOY like effort while singlehandlely winning a few late games from his ball stopping. His assists are also great and would probably be higher with proper role players, but that's always been his strong suit. Where I feel that he hasn't grown is half court and late-game offense, where he pretty much follows the same playbook he has since his rookie year. I will say that in the latter half of this season, he was much more aggressive, got to the line more, and knocked down more FTs, but he has had stretches like that before so I'll need to see it more consistently before I say he has really grown offensively.

With Horford, he was never a star, but he definitely had a major impact on the Hawks and Celtics. He was a defensive anchor who we saw stop Embiid like no one besides Marc Gasol could, and you could count on him to take efficient shots and reliably make good plays. On the Sixers, his defense was no where close to being as good as advertised, and his efficiency was way down. Part of that is on the Sixers for putting him in an unfamiliar role, and injuries likely played a role since he was actually doing really well for the team at the start of the season. I just don't think that any player falls off a cliff that hard at age 33 without being dealt a bad hand, so I'd say the Sixers staff is suspect for his decline.

I like Simmons a lot party because he is very exciting to watch. For a guy who is almost 7 ft tall , he is very fast. If you give him any part of a lane, he will get right by you and dunk with an exclamation point. Unfortunately, we may get to see any of them play this year. I am very doubtful that basketball, a contact sport without protection, will return this year in any form, unless the NBA can test these players regularly. I do not think we have or will create enough tests to do the massive testing that would be needed.

I am much more optimistic about baseball, which has natural social distancing. You would still need to test the players regularly, though. Not sure if you are a Phillies fan or not. For the most part, I primarily go to Phillies games when they play the Mets. I grew up in NY and have a strong allegiance to the Mets. We as Mets fans have been suffering for a long time.

I realize that there are more important things in life, but it is terrible not to be able to watch sports.

This is the first year I had ever gone to a Sixers game and I went to a few of them. Even though my favorite sport is baseball, it is so much more exciting to watch a basketball game in-person
