GS Global Compliance - What is it!

Hey all, preparing for a phone interview with GS Global Compliance but I'm rather ill-informed as to what global compliance entails. I know it's broken down into

Compliance Surveillance Strategy
Global Compliance Employee Services
Global Compliance Testing, Regulatory Audits and Inquiries, Global Compliance Training and Communications and Global Control Room Chaperones

and I've read the little vague blurbs but I'm still a little confused as to what it's all about. Is compliance just about pushing papers and making sure everything is within standard practices protocol? I mean I know the surveillance strategy works with fraud and what not, but in general, what am I getting myself into?

Just a confused monkey looking for some input.

(Tried googling, provides little clarification)

Thanks all

compliance is hte department that ensures that the bank is following SEC rules. so you're the people who make sure that IBD doesn't disclose anything material, that research doesn't say anything stupid that could put the bank on the line, etc. compliance is like the internal police department. they are the group that makes sure nobody leaves important documents on their desks.

lol, thanks for tht story drexel

and thanks for the information monument, I think I'm just gonna have to wing it if anything technical comes up, I don't really know anything about compliance

You will not get "technical" questions in a compliance interview because it is not a banking position. It is a back office position more akin to legal than banking. You answer inquiries from regulatory agencies like FINRA, draft memos, monitor e-mail and make sure people are complying with the rules.

Best Response

Hello guys. I had quick question... I am currently a junior and am looking to get a summer analyst position in corporate compliance in a BB. I was told that every BB has a compliance department that has summer analyst positions , but it appears that most BB's have different names for their compliance department and I am not sure that those positions are open.

I already interviewed with GS and am still waiting for a response, but maybe you guys know of other opportunities? JP? MS? BOA?

Please let me know
