VP in PE - LBOs:
Easy - partner to managing partner. Generally have to wait for the current managing partners to retire, then get chosen out of all the partners to ascend. Its why people leave funds to start their own.

How about senior associate to VP? I've heard that is a difficult jump.

Principal to partner also super hard. VP to principal probably(?) the easiest

Can confirm. This is a pretty straightforward promotion in my eyes. As long as you’re still on track to be a partner...

That said, the speed at which you can get this promotion varies a lot. You can get it quickly if you’re good / lucky, otherwise you can be held back years.

Associate to VP is probably the biggest bottleneck — you need a lot of the former to do scut work but only so many of the latter given the role is more process management, etc.

You could get bounced after Associate for reasons that have nothing to do with you. If you’re a VP / Principal and have proven the potential to make it rain, I feel like it’s easier to write your own ticket.
