My pastor is a Messianic Jew (Jew for Jesus). He says in one of his sermons: "Ya know, if you're Jewish, you can only grow up to be 1 of 3 things--and I'm Jewish--those are a doctor, a lawyer or a failure and a preacher definitely falls in category #3."

Jews and banking goes back thousands of years, all the way back to the "money changers" in the Temple in the Bible. More recently, the Rothschild family in the 19th century made modern banking and Judaism synonymous. I think it's cultural. In the same way Israelis rule the mall kiosk market (and that's not even a joke--dead serious) Jews dominate the banking industry (in terms of proportion to their numbers). But even as a gentile (with Nazi ancestry), I have to admit that the Semites just seem to be a little smarter and/or a little more driven than everyone else. Like poverty though, my guess is that culture has a ton to do with it.

It is good to know. I totally agree with you. Culture is really the key.

It's because of the value we put on education. Historically, a quarter of all Jewish people over 18 years old hold graduate degrees -- compare that to only 5% of the total population. Finance is a field that values education, so it makes sense that lots of Jewish people go into the field.

Really? It's unbelievable that people over 18 years old hold graduate degrees. What is the education system like?

VT4ever my guess is you run into a lot of people who are "just a little bit smarter" than yourself...I am sure the Jews on this forum are more than flattered by your compliments given your Nazi ancestry and all.

Haha. Was this supposed to be some kind of an insult or something? Haha. Ok. You feel better?

If you look across a few industries they are dominated at the top by jews. Finance and media are both run nearly entirely by jews. It is interesting that they account for less than 1% of the population yet control banking and several of the biggest media corporations (film studios, newspapers, television, etc.)

I happen to be a Jew. Like many jews, I never go to temple, but that's not really the point, is it?

Are you asking if people of Jewish descent are smarter than other races? Maybe. You're not the first person to ask the question, and several scholarly studies on the matter have already been conducted. Most of the studies seem to suggest that Jews (especially Ashkenazi Jews) are of above average intelligence.

The explanations offered for the findings are not universally accepted, though. Some maintain that Jews select for intelligence, so natural selection produced the higher-than-normal IQs. Some suggest it is cultural--that work ethic and ingenuity were important survival factors in Europe for the Jewish community over the past several centuries, and as such, those characteristics have been passed down by the surviving members of that community.

The reason Jews tend to go into finance, law, medicine, the media or Rabbinical studies is fairly simple--those are the best options that have been open to us. A lot of people throughout history have disliked us. I'm not going to give you the sob story of Jewish persecution, but adversity tends to separate the wheat from the chaffe. And in those fields, we can excel. On average, we're not particularly fast or strong, but we are pretty smart. We have won more than a quarter of all Nobel Prizes across all fields (to be honest, the percentage would be higher, but we haven't won too many Peace Prizes), and more than a quarter of all Fields Medals. We also tend to make better-than-average Chess players, and have produced a sizeable percentage of all grandmasters.

With that said, we represent 0.2% of the world's population. Either we're smarter by birth, or we work a lot harder as a people. As with most things, it's probably a combination of the two factors. When coupled with the fact that we like to help other Jews, we become successful.

Now, I hope that argument wasn't too difficult for your puny non-Ashkenazi minds to comprehend.

noobmonkey:
From what I've seen, jews help jews, so this has got to be great for networking.. The work ethic and emphasis on education like asians, but they don't look foreign.

I'm not being racist, these are truths.

noobmonkey has it right. Jews typically help out other Jews.

Jewish families that dominate the finance world will hookup their own kin.

I'm Jewish and I don't know about anyone else, but I've found the free parking and my yearly secret tax deduction to be a huge boon in my personal and professional life. Plus the decoder rings are just fashionable really.

They effectively use their jew claws to slash at and gain advantages over gentiles.
