Has anyone successfully gone back to work for a former employer?

Left a firm/city about a year ago and there is a lot I miss about it (people, culture, city, etc.)

Turns out the grass is not always greener. I left on great terms and still keep in touch with most of that team, and I feel like i should give this new company/city at least another year before even considering another job switch. I've already worked for 3 different companies and I'm still in my 20s, so I hate the idea of bouncing around.

Has anyone successfully gone back to a former employer? Besides keeping in touch with the group and monitoring opportunities, any other advice to keep that option open? Or is this whole thought a bad idea in the first place (like going back to an ex girlfriend)?

I've seen people come back to my firm, but it depends why you left in the first place...If you left because of personal reasons (ie. girlfriend/wife moving, family etc..), then your circumstances changed, and you end up back in the same city - then yes. If you left because of career reasons (wanted more pay with another firm in the same city, promotion with another firm in the same city) - then its unlikely.

Think of it, it's like girls just like you said. If you leave the girl because of life circumstances, then may be you can come back to each other. If you leave the girl because of other girls, then no.
