Have many people bought a Peloton or high end fitness equipment during quarantine?

Just thinking about the Lululemon acquisition of Mirror, wanted to see how many people bought high end exercise equipment during quarantine?

Just makes me think how working out (and I guess a lot of other things) are more about status symbols and paying $100 to fix a $1 problem.

Also makes me think about prior workout fads. On CNBC they also say "this time its different", but it usually ends up being the same. Don't know if this will stick as a trend. I have many family members who have bought trendmills over the years in an effort to jumpstart their workout but the trendmills turned into clothing racks. Kinda think the same thing will happen here.

My friends have Pelotons and I don’t agree with your stance that they are an overpriced fad. Compared to taking individual classes at peloton or soulcycle, owning one and using the subscription service is actually a steal. The branded/ social components come at a premium but they motivate owners to actually use the product and exercise while treadmills are one time purchases that can become an afterthought

Is it a fad? maybe

It is overpriced? Price is what you pay, value is what you get (S/O Warren Buffett). Saying something isn't overpriced because it costs less dollars compared to something else doesn't make it fairly priced.

I'm saying people are spending higher and higher amounts on fitness/workouts. I'm more asking, is the goal to get in shape/fit, or to just brag about riding a peloton?

I bought some Rogue dumbbells, so I wouldn't be surprised if purchases are up. I wish I had the room for a good stationary bike (I'm not paying for a Peloton) but my apartment is a bit small for that.

I'm not the market for Pelotons though, since I never spent time in Soul Cycle before COVID. The weightroom and rec sports were always enough for me.

purchased some rogue equipment as well as some other interesting shit (trying to mimic Rogan's gym with maybe 20% of the space), but no subscription services, I have a garage, I'm trying to make it an iron paradise.

I do have friends who have purchased subscription based fitness stuff and have been using it, but time will tell if they stick with it when gyms are up and running

what could be different about the treadmills is that you've always had that option (running or walking) so the treadmill was always the lazy copout. cycling can be very dangerous in cities and for a lot of people, getting into that world is a bigger pricetag than a nice stationary bike. I'm looking at a skierg, rowing machine, and assault bike for my next purchases.

also trying to do an ice bath but have no clue on costs for that, we'll see

What Rogue shit are you buying up? I have an ongoing build of a basement gym/spa(?), a yard gym, and a bodyweight/mobility area on the 1st floor. It was so weird how the whole damn internet was sold out of weights. It took me 6 weeks to get a 60lb kettlebell. I was pretty well stocked going in though... That Rogue shit is so primo but so pricey. I keep trying to buy the Echo bike but it gets sold out within like 10 minutes of going back in stock every time.

Guess what else is cool.. Keetlebell pullovers. Give those a shot. Current fave exercise v happy to discuss home gym shit thats like my happy space

oh duuuuude biggest home gym game changer? i was driving around and passed a pawn shop which i'd never actually been in one before... been to a bunch of thrift shops - never a pawn shop. anyway, turns out these guys have hellllla audio equipment and powertool, which besides gym gear are like my favesies. i walked out with a pinoneer amp and two giant Kenmoore speakers for $40 lol. Emphasis on the giant speakers. Cause to make good, big sound you need big speakers. and i set that shit up in the basement with a sub and i can really make the shit loud, but a sustainable non-cheap sort of loud... i'd never buy nice audio equipment like i would for my real life areas of the house for the gym... but working out is like 75% of my music listening i realized... so this was sweet

I think connected fitness is here to stay. The time savings alone make it worth it IMO. I do not own any of the above but see this as the intersection of two tailwinds being social connectivity and fitness. This can be supplemented with in-person classes but it's just so easy to do it at home, why carve out the time it takes to go to a studio and all the extra stuff you need to lug there for it? Lots of people counter that the in-person interactions and relationships make it worth it but that was always a secondary item- the class came first and those relationships can easily be built online now and even larger than before. I have tried in class spinning and it's motivating as hell but I will say when I tried a peloton I found them same motivating experience and possibly more motivating because of how competitive it is. It's expensive though, however for those that put down the ~2K for a bike, you know they'll continue to pay the months fee for the classes. Talk about a sticky user base

Bought a peloton. With the 0% APR payment plan its only about $60/month for the bike + all accessories and then $40/month for the subscription. Really not bad at all. Plus now I'm actually willing to knock out a cardio workout in the morning before work which is priceless. Bought a cheap yoga mat too for the bodyweight strength workouts which I've enjoyed more than going to the gym too. Cancelled my gym membership in late March and will probably never go to a gym again.

no i think pelicans are a dirty bird but i did recently buy a second 19 gal chest freezer to turn into an ice bath because my wife commandeered the first one for oddly-shaped breast milk baggies and trader joes cauliflower products also got a tushy.me and ive worked my way up to the maximum intensity setting its been a real journey

ChuckieSullivan:

Dropped some coin to upgrade my Pinarello since she was over due for a face lift and is about to get a shitload more miles than planned this summer.

Dura Ace mechanical —> Di2 electronic Alum. fulcrum wheelset —> Zipp 404 NSW carbons

Rollers > Peloton :)

Zipp 404s are nice.

But:

Direct drive > rollers > Peloton

I bought a Wahoo Kickr Core direct drive trainer during the quarantine and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My fitness and skills on the bike have definitely improved and I find Zwift and Zwift racing to be tons of fun. Very convenient.

You dirty dog. My roommate and I might throw the sectional out of our living room window and put two DD trainers in front of the TV... Damn you NYC living.

The whole wahoo set up (including computer on bike) is so next level awesome. Talk about nerding out on numbers and performance.

This thread has certifiably checked me out for the day. My bike staring at me like a needy pet in the living room wasn’t enough. Now you guys too!?

Definitely. That is also coming from the most tech averse person (maybe ever?).

Worth every penny for the upgrade kit. The performance and ease of use is laughably cool. Has not failed me yet...

The purist (rim brakes forever!) in me hates everything about it, but I am totally on board. Like I said, massively tech averse and it passes my smell test. No computer, no phone, no power meter, no heart rate monitor, no cadence meter. Christ, I have never even had an instagram/facebook/twitter. Do it!

Did I mention all the pros use electronic? That means we NEED it.

I'm building out a full garage gym with the help of Sorinex. Power rack with jammer arms, oly platform, glute ham raise, and a set of Powerblocks.

Also probably going to get into cycling. Looking at an Endurace from Canyon.

Before I was working out at Equinox and training BJJ, both of which don't look like they'll be coming back to full capacity anytime soon.

I got a Kickr trainer for my bike. IMO, I don't see why you would get a peloton, you can get a trainer AND a bike for the same price and a Zwift subscription is only $15 / month vs. $40 for peloton.

We transformed our guest bedroom into a gym, we do a mix of HIIT and yoga so minimal equipment required. We use a mix of Nike Training (free), Down dog ($40 / year) and classpass. I am NEVER going back to the gym, way too much time wasted.

The endurace is an A+ choice. Check out Canyon’s “outlet” (on the website), they sell em at a bit of a discount (open box units). I have had 3 friends buy them this year with good luck and satisfaction. Nice geometry and a good price for carbon + 105 on the lower cost units. One of the best value options out there in my opinion.

A lot of years enduring eye rolls from my boys for being into cycling. Enjoying my time on my high horse...

At least where I live, cycling is as much of a business exec/networking thing as golf is.

I want to get into it just so that I actually do some cardio since rec sports are dead

Yep! Sorinex is one of the top equipment makers. The fact that their gear is made in the US / South is a nice added bonus.

Don't have the oly platform yet. Will be here at the end of the month. Will report back then. This is the one I ordered in case you're interested.

Sold my 4 yr old alu tiagra road bike for a carbon 105 gravel bike. Comfort + flexibility > +~5% speed

Got myself one 16, two 24 and one 32kg Kettlebells. Used them maybe once a week. Absolutely not worth it if you ask me. I had a Concept2 at home before COVID, did lots of km on that.

lol a bunch Id say... been on calls with people and a bunch have bought one or for their family / parents bc theyre at home for whatever reason, etc.

in the big scheme of things they’re really backed up rn and by the time they get things out demand should level out.

echo the sentiments that value is different for everyone and price is a filter for how much value that is. everyone values things differently and has a different willingness to pay. this thing is something where by paying BS fees, people are MORE motivated to work out! that’s a gold mine because paying more is in line with an incentive for what people actually want! imagine that— but that’s fitness for ya.

Yeah I know some people who went gung-ho on their homegym. I personally think its a waste of money for many reasons but to each their own. IMO just run outdoors, find some 50 dollar title 100lb bag from a local gym, and some sandbags/bricks will do the trick. sitting in ur room and biking on a $2500 stationary bike sounds depressing as fuck.

I spent $1000 for a Wahoo Kickr Core smart trainer to get on Zwift and it was one of the best decisions of my life. There is no other way besides a treadmill to get my HR that high indoors in my own pain cave and Zwift races are fun as hell. To really push yourself in your own place without having to leave is priceless. If you're looking to save time through efficient workouts, getting a smart trainer with Zwift is the way to go.
