Have you ever done something to prove it to yourself?

Exactly what the title asks. For example:

Next semester I will be taking organic chemsitry because I always hear premed students and others say how econ/business majors have it easy and cannot do their work. I want to know if I actually can do well in orgo. I feel like if I wasn't an econ major I would still be successful in school.

Even if you regret doing it, post it.

So, what have you done?

No, usually do something to prove it to someone else.

I dont need to prove anything to myself. I've always felt that I know what I am capable of thus dont need anything to validate me.

Sounds like you're trying to prove to others not yourself. Since you're already so sure of yourself and you believe you will easily ace the class, why bother? Personally I always try to challenge myself intellectually or physically, but I could care less if anyone is watching or knows what im doing, seems like you have ulterior motives.

Agreed. OP's rationale makes it look like he's doing it to prove to others.

To answer the initial question: yes I have. Usually physical challenges more than anything. I personally wouldn't ever do a challenge like yours because it doesn't seem productive in any way. You'll never use the material and you'll waste so much of your time.

Even though I sit at a desk all day and will never play sports at a competitive level ever again (rec leagues don't count), I still really push myself in my workouts to both see what I can accomplish and to make myself feel and look better.

The combination of your profile saying you have a 4.0 in math at MIT, twice as many monkey shits as SBs, and the idiocy of what you're doing makes me think you are a gasp troll.

Since when can one take O-chem without basic first year p-chem as a science major?

.

This.

It's impossible to take o-chem without taking 2 semesters of general chem. There is just no way the stuff in o-chem will make sense to you unless you have taken the fundamental classes first.

How do I know this? I've taken all the pre-med classes because in a past life I wanted to go to med school

Conclusion: WH=troll (and a dumb one at that).

well you are going to feel dumb. First of all, i already got approved by the professor that teaches it. Second, i took AP chemistry in high school and general chem 2 freshman year because you need 1 chem/bio requirement. So therefore, i would have the necessary requirements to take it.

"Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way. In twenty years, if you're still livin' here, comin' over to my house to watch the Patriots games, still workin' construction, I'll fuckin' kill you. That's not a threat, that's a fact.

No one ever told ME personally that I could not do it. But hearing everyone talk about how hard o.chem is makes me curious to see if I can do it. I am in no way trying to prove it to anyone else but i see how it could seem like that.

@D M- The monkey shit all came from one thread about earrings a while ago

I took O Chem 1/2 and a bunch of other engineering/science courses--they aren't hard but just require time to grind through the material or copious amounts of adderall.

Pre-med students moan about their schedule since all that really matters for entry to medical school is GPA and MCAT score. O-chem is a notorious weed out course not because of the material but because you have 200+ pre-medical students who will fight tooth and nail over every single point hoping to get the highest score possible--getting a C in O-chem isn't necessarily a death sentence but can tarnish med school apps.

Anyway if you want to prove yourself, go for it and don't let anyone stop you. Just keep in mind if you are trying to prove yourself through sheer academic rigor, you should sign up for some senior level math or physics classes instead.

op, ur wasting ur tuition money....

Don't pay any. Full Ride.

Also, wtf does that even mean. Because I want to take a class that challenges my intellectual capacity, it is wasting my tuition money? Oh yea...i forgot college was just about going to do something that your parents want you to do since they are paying and not something that you actually like. Fucking people these days

If you like doing it and have basic chem then by all means go for it. The first part of the course is also much easier than the second, that's when the real fun starts with memorizing reactions. It's not that hard honestly, just a lot of material to memorize and the labs are tedious as hell. Have fun with the microgram measurements lol. I hated it and that's why I switched in the end. I would use lab time to study and write papers though while waiting for experiments to run. Using the mass spectrometer and analyzing the compounds were actually pretty fun though if you enjoy that type of problem.

Okay, since you're saying you're not a troll:

Why take O Chem? Why not take a challenging as shit class that YOU'RE ACTUALLY INTERESTED IN? You can challenge yourself and enjoy yourself at the same time. Take advantage of your full ride.

I dont know if i would have the necessary education to take a class such as differential equations or thermodynamics if i had not taken the previous courses. those would probably be impossible

And then after you ace the class you can meet a beautiful Harvard chick named Skylar and you can tutor her and y'all can bang and then eventually you can chase her to California...
