Having a call with the group head at a BB; I don’t really know what to do during it.
I’m a sophomore at a semi target and I was screwing around and cold emailed a group head at a BB who is an alumni. I didn’t expect a response, but he actually responded in less than a day to set up a time.
Also all of my networking calls have been with analysts. I’ve done a very small amount with VPs and MDs but I’ve always just had a much better social click with people close to my own age.
What would I even ask him in this situation. Typically, I just ask analysts how they found themselves where they are then move on to non-finance things like campus life and sports. Sometimes, I ask about recruiting as well.
I am fairly sure this guy comes for recruiting here occasionally.
Any advice is greatly apprieciated.
have you looked the guy up on Linkedin? What's his background? I find with big types, that one wants to have two kinds of questions. One is about the person. The other thing.. Do you have anything in common with him? If so, bring that out. Was he a college swimmer and you recently just picked up swimming in order to get in better shape? Mention that and ask him about swimming. So often these guys talk shop and they will be refreshed to take a minute or five on other stuff. It transports them out of work mode into a hobby or something they love/loved/past experiecnes what have you. It also shows that you have done your DD (good), are engaging (good) and that can all be translated into being potentially good with future clients and teammates (very good).
Usually people are happy to talk about themselves. This means they will enjoy the conversation with you. This means they will happily keep in touch with you. This means that you may get an edge when you apply for a job/internship and they push you through.
The other group of questions is on what they do at their job, what they think about the market, tips they may have etc. He won't expect you to know anything so you won't have to memorize things like yields, PEs, FX rates etc.
Of course make it clear that you are looking to apply for an internship this year next year or whatever, and want to learn more about what people like him do/the business to be well informed and a better candidate for when you do apply. The guy knows why you are emailing and want to talk, so don't beat around the bush.
No matter what this will be great practice for you. You have already won.
