HBS Advanced Management Program
Hi WSO,
Does anyone have information on the level within a company one needs to attain in order to be competitive for this program? The HBS website is quite ambiguous on the matter.
The reason I ask is because I'm about to be promoted to Director, and I think the training provided in this program will be very beneficial for my professional development. There are at least three senior executives at my bank who have participated in the program so I know that my bank is very open to sponsoring this sort of education. With that said, the three executives I mentioned are all at the EVP level or above, and the one person I asked was a SVP (i.e. one level above Managing Director) when he enrolled in the AMP. He told me that the content of the program wasn't necessarily specific to someone at his level, and he felt that a Director or Managing Director would also benefit from the content.
So my question is - would I have a chance of getting in to the program as a Director? Or would I need to get to the executive level before the program offers sufficient value?
Thanks in advance.
Seems like a great question for the admissions office. That's not the kind of thing that you need anecdotal evidence for - I imagine they'd come right out and say what the standard student profile looks like.
This got me interested (although I'm not at Dir yet). Per their website:
An ideal candidate for AMP is:
http://www.exed.hbs.edu/programs/amp/Pages/participants.aspx
Also:
Typically, participants come from organizations with annual revenues in excess of $250 million and have approximately 20 to 25 years of work experience, including a significant amount of time as a senior manager or an officer of the company
I would say as a Director, you're probably not as seasoned as they would like, but that's just my interpretation.
Thanks for the suggestion. I started my querry by calling the admissions office and they just referred me to the website saying the relevant information is all there. The website suggests that the ideal candidate is is two levels from CEO at a company with more than 250MM in revenue. The reason I think this information is ambiguous is that someone who is two levels away from CEO at a 250MM revenue company would probably be at least four levels away from CEO at a bank like mine. In any case, perhaps you're right. I probably need to be a bit more persistent with the admissions office. Thanks again.
Accountingbyday, I think you're right. Director probably is still too junior for it. Thanks for the comment.
