HBS chances
I'm trying to finish my bachelors this year. I had taken leave from school due to a health problem.
I know I could succeed as an ideas generating trader or manager at a decent sized fund.
Here's the problem:
I don't have any work experience in the industry.
The school I'd have my degree from is a non-elite school.
By the time I could apply to HBS I would be 32.
What could I do during the next year which would increase my chances (which are now zero) of getting admitted to HBS ?
This industry is never going to even look at me unless I have an Ivy degree, so that's my only shot as I have no contacts who are powerful enough to get me a job.
Please do tell how you 'know' you could succeed as an idea generator, brother.

Impossible to say but I would ask yourself why you think you have to go to HBS to get into the industry. Graduate undergrad, get a job (any job), do well in job, do well on GMAT, get good recommendations, write good essays, interview well and have a story. Even then, HBS is extremely selective.
I don't know your situation but I broke into an industry in which I had no experience...schools and former employers helped only to the extent of "well, if you're smart enough to get into xyz or to have worked for abc, I'm sure you can pick this up".
Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but you shouldn't even consider HBS until you have some work experience, know why you want an MBA and seriously consider whether it's necessary and worth the expense (it ain't cheap). Others will disagree but I have an MBA from a top school and consider it valuable/extremely helpful....question is whether it's worth the $ (tuition and oppty cost) to learn, mature, access the network, etc.
PM me if you'd like more detailed thoughts but I wouldn't even be considering HBS or anywhere else until you actually graduate and have some experience, any experience.
Ochen malo shansov.
You need to get at least some work experience, stellar GMAT (750+), maybe add some e/c stuff how you saved the whales on the North pole etc and get a job in a well known international company (its relatively easier to get to places like PG,Mars - look into it),then after 2-3 years we can speak about MBA. Even if HBS is not an option, there are many decent schools there..Wharton,Columbia etc.
