I agree with you. Just as the president is not the richest person in the country, the head of trading group might not be richer than star traders...
The group head has more guaranteed comp, so if the most profitable trader brought in $1, the group head would get more. However, in most situations it's the most profitable trader that earns the most.
If the most profitable trader in a group made $1, the entire group would be fired.
It's a completely different comp structure. The Group Head has a much higher base so he can basically suck at life for a good 2 years, make at least 1M until he gets canned. As stated above, prop trader has a lower base and alot more pressure because if he has a couple suck weeks, one day his I.D. won't let him get to the elevators.
Star trader.
Then again, the biggest earner is probably the guy who is both (I've seen it happen).

the way I see it.. you pay the trader making the money and you keep your management job and cont to get paid. for having the trader
