Healthcare Consulting to PE?

Hi all,

New member here, excited to join this community. I spent some time reading through past posts that are relevant to my question, but I was hoping to find a bit more info specific to my situation and felt posting here might help with that.

Currently, I am a senior analyst (level II analyst, essentially the level right after entry level) at a healthcare consulting firm in Washington, D.C. Recently, I've gotten interested in finance--PE to be more specific--and wanted to see what sort of opportunities there are to transition from where I am to a role at a PE firm here in DC.

Non-work background: solid GPA from top-20 undergrad, healthcare related masters from Ivy school, work experience in pharma/biotech, and now working in consulting.

I know that folks typically enter PE after some previous experience in finance (which I don't have), but I wanted to know if that's possible at all coming from consulting without a finance background. I would be happy to work in healthcare PE to get my foot in the door of finance, although I would hope to transition out of that and into other industries.I work for a reputable firm, but it's not MBB. Also, I know I would start at an entry level position (or a pretty low level gig), which is fine--I just don't want to take a salary drop. I don't mind starting low, because I know I have to cut my teeth and prove my skills before I can expect anything more.

My questions are:

-how can I enter PE with a healthcare consulting background?
-what sort of role/department would be my best bet?
-how many years of consulting experience is typical before making the switch?
-any recommended next steps of action?

Thank you all in advance for reading this and taking the time to respond.

Best,
BC

How technical is your health care knowledge? Biomedical engineering undergrad? Engineering role in biotech? If so, maybe some sort of healthcare growth equity shop would give you a look. Otherwise, you should try for a healthcare banking job.
