Hedge fund recruiter towards Master of Financial Engineering at Worldquant University

Will you consider the Master of Financial Engineering from the Worldquant University as legitimate? Do you have any opinion towards this master degree? Thank you in advance for your valuable opinion.

In my experience in this industry, there are even more PhDs applying than MFEs for junior positions, let alone MFE from Worlduant Univ. Besides WQ is not generally considered the most generous towards its employees, so I would think twice about their incentive in providing this "free" education. It looks almost as if they are trying to recruit data miners through this pipeline.

I have actually considered applying to their degree, reached out to alumni who already have decent positions at good companies and they seemed to have benefited from it quite a lot.

What turns me away though is that they are still not accredited. You will get great skills - yes, but it will not be an accredited degree.

If it is going to be your only postgrad qualification - I would not advise doing it, because it will not tick the necessary 'MA/MSc required' mark in CV and will not be a bonus point like an accredited degree if you will be getting a professional visa like Blue Card in Europe.

However, If you already have a postrad qualification, or planning to do another one aside from their MSFE, and are taking it only to get the necessary skills and not just to put it on your CV, then go for it, why not?

“Destiny is a gift. Some go their entire lives, living existences of quiet desperation, never learning the truth that what feels as though a burden pushing down upon their shoulders is really a sense of purpose that lifts us to greater heights. Never forget that fear is but the precursor to valor, that to strive and triumph in the face of fear is what it means to be a hero. Don’t think. Become.”
