Help a newb: Operations Analyst job, can someone give me a detailed description of what that entails?
Hi, New to WSO so if this is wrong forum to post this I apologize. I'm about to start working as an operations analyst at a medium sized broker/dealer, but wanted some more info as far as what exactly that entails.
The reason I know so little was that I was actually interviewing for a different position and it turned out they were hesitant to hire me but I was able to convince them to give me a back office job so I could get my foot in the door.
I'm starting to get the impression that this is more of a 9-5 clerical type job? Is that accurate? I've been self employed for 5 years, and took a huge pay cut to do this because I want to get into trading, I know this might not work out but that's ok, I can always go back to what I was doing. As long as I'm able to gain a lot of product specific knowledge I'm ok with that.
Most importantly I really just want to know what I can do to stand out, and make the best impression possible. I also don't want to go into it completely ignorant as to what I'm going to be doing.
Thanks for any help, much appreciated.
It didn't occurr to you to ask someone this question before you left your old job and took a pay cut?
I'm likely to call troll on this as I find it VERY hard to believe someone with 5 years of work experience is dumb enough to just up and leave their current career and accept an offer for a position without having the slightest idea of if that position will help them get to their end goal.
Thanks for your input, I've left out all the pertinent details regarded my decision to switch careers for the simple reason that I'm not looking for you or anybody else's opinion on that. That's not why I made this thread. It wasn't a decision I took lightly, and a variety of factors come into play which you have no basis to speculate on. If you don't believe me but want to be helpful maybe try and suspend disbelief for 5 min? And again it wasn't a "job" in the sense that I could go back to doing it at any time, literally within a week. And I'm quite certain that it will help me get to my end goal assuming I do well. Taking the pay cut is absolutely worth it for me, just leave it at that?
operations is a fairly broad term. Most likely though it will involve some sort of trade settlement.
yes, you will gain intricate product knowledge, not necessarily the business aspect of a product, but how it functions in the market etc.
to stand out focus on process development, question things that you think could be improved (although not right away).
