Help - Healthcare IB with no bio degree but with healthcare management concentration at Wharton
Hey guys, I was wondering how much importance do healthcare IB groups place on having a bio degree on your resume when recruiting for summer analysts? I'm in Wharton and am doing healthcare management as one of my concentrations (apart from finance, accounting yada yada). I've worked at healthcare PE firm this past summer (quite unknown though) and have shown general interest in healthcare throughout (did a lot of science stuff in high school, like science research and this summer research program organized by MIT). Also involved in healthcare investing clubs on campus. Would do people looking through resumes give me a chance and offer me an interview or would they automatically zing me because of lack of bio degree at Penn?
Just FYI, I decided against the bio degree because I'm pretty confident of learning the science on my own (reading research papers, clinical results, textbooks, 10Ks) and I personally think taking these science classes at a bachelor's level isn't spending my time wisely if I'm not thinking of a PhD or MD - esp since IB doesn't even need such high level knowledge (if we're talking about biotech HF then that's a different story). Also because I wanted to take a healthcare management concentration in place as I think that adds more value - understanding the system and payor/patient/provider mix isn't as easy as learning about cancer drugs from a textbook/research reports IMO. (There're other reasons but its complicated...)
But yeah bottom line is, do I still stand a fighting chance, or should I just stop emphasizing the whole healthcare thing and position myself as more of a generalist? (As of now, I'm interested in M&A advisory first then industry coverage second)
Love to hear you guys' thoughts!
