Help Needed
Hey Guys,
I am currently in my second year of college pursuing my Bachelors In Commerce ( Finance And Accounting).
I have been wondering about which career path to choose in the financial services sector.
What appealed to me the most are hedge funds and PE.
However I have a few doubts.
I read about the transitions from IB to HF. HF is primarily trading right? So how can someone who's been into M&A or corp fin etc suddenly shift to trading? Or people moving from IB to HF have different job roles? Could someone please specify the different job roles in a HF and also within the IBD of a bank.
Thanks :)
Hedge funds, although there are a fair amount of stat-arb quant funds out there, are usually "investing" not "trading". Trading is more often thought of as traditional sell-side S&T, prop shop, and market making.
Yes, certain megafunds do have both sides of the business, such as Citadel. But more often than not, your run of the mill $500M AUM hedge fund is fundamental investing ie. global macro, distressed, L/S fundamental, merger-arb, special situations (possibly the broadest/vauge fund strategy).
I'd highly suggest taking some time and reading past forum posts. You'll receive a better understanding to your questions than anyone is willing to type out for you specifically.
too early to do PE and HFs, best advice i can give is to take 2-3yrs in a big bank doing M&A or the like and make a move. Build your tool-box. will make you much more valuable later on
Alright cool. But assuming i do M&A for a while and then move into HFs. Could u gimme a small brief up on the job role of an ex IB analyst in a hedge fund?
