Help Needed: Big 4 Intern Seeking To Switch Divisions

Hey monkeys,

Title is pretty self explanatory. I'm currently an audit intern and recruiters within the firm are already talking about filling out paper work for fulltime. In my opinion audit sucks so far and it doesn't interest me. I'd rather get in on the advisory side. Does anyone have any advice on how to complete this internal transfer?

What are your specific gripes? In what ways has your experience not met your expectations? And do you think it's possible that your experience (which according to the usual internship schedule, would only have been about a month so far) isn't an all-encompassing, fair representation of what an audit entails?

What line of advisory work do you think would be more interesting and fulfilling?

Not intended as snark / facetiousness. Genuinely curious as to your train of thought. Plus, if / when you do speak up about this, you should have good answers to all of the above, because you will be asked.

Back in my day, I never saw what you're proposing put into practice, but I will offer the following random thoughts which may or may not be helpful in some way.

I did see interns complete internships in my office, only to finagle full time offers to work in other offices. This was generally viewed as a load of BS, especially by the full time audit drones who (in their minds) strove to provide the warm bodies -- I mean, interns, with a fulsome experience that would induce them to accept an offer (if extended). You may find it challenging to get a full time offer in advisory lined up, unless you already have some good connections (Sr. Mgr. or above) in the advisory practice you'd like to work in; as you will likely have no one in audit going to bat for you, since they will view you as a snake in the grass.

It's possible that, once you make it clear that you would prefer to work in advisory, you won't receive a full time audit offer, and you will be encouraged to apply online to the advisory position of your choosing through the firm's careers website and go through a whole separate interview process. This is what we would have done in my office; your mileage may vary.

None of this should dissuade you from pursuing what you want; just be prepared for the worst case scenario.

Thanks for the reply...I do truly want to go about this as careful as possible because of a "worst case possible scenario"

Specific Gripes: not challenging enough...this may be because I am currently tasked on a small client so this may change when I move to another client but I am also no longer interested in pursuing a CPA but rather a CFA or set of series. I have much more interest in finance and modeling and valuations of businesses rather than auditing (if that makes sense). I think the internship is a fair representation of what I thought it entailed however, I just want to work and develop in a role that I not only have a likeness for but also develop technical skills within those roles that will help me grow.

Line of Advisory Work: I have a double major of Finance and Accounting and by doing a lot of research on this website I think I would be more comfortable in a FMFS, EVS , or Deal Advisory role.

The whole reinterview process could be daunting and thanks for pointing that out. I OCR'd in a completely different city from where I'm interning and was able to transfer because of alumni at this office it seems like. I'm currently in the New York office so I'm not sure I'd be able to transition as easy as someone from a different city?

Do you know the capability of this depending on market size of city? Or does that not apply?
