Help out a noob.
Hey, i'm a junior at a top 20 us news school. We have some of the consulting firms recruit here but not a lot of them so I'm guess this would be considered a non-target school. I have a couple questions if you guys could help.
1) i'm currently a finance/political science double major. I already have all my requirements fulfilled for my poli sci as I was originally planning on law school. I'm not as in to my finance classes as I originally thought I would and i'm interested in changing my second major from finance to an applied business economics major. I'm not sure if this will hurt me or not? It is basically just the difference in like 3-4 classes. Instead of taking foreign markets and financial managment i'll be taking business strategy and value appropriation. Could someone advice if this is smart or not. Also, my GPA is about 3.6, does this really hurt me?
2) I am going on a recruiting/network event next week in a large city. A select group of kids from my school were picked and we are basically seeing some offices and then having drinks/dinner with recruiters from several firms and companies. I wonder if anyone has some advice on what to expect, how to handle myself, how to stand out, etc.
3) What is the best way to prepare and get more knowledge on the area? I really want to be able to expand my current understand.
4) Lastly, I have an LSAT score in the 99th percentile, meaning I could get into several top ten and maybe even top five law schools. But I really don't think I want to go to law school right now. But i'm wondering if this is something I should advertise on my resume or in an interview. I know McKinsey asks for all test scores with their application but I wonder if my LSAT score would actually worry them that I would leave for law school? Or is it just a non-issue and I shouldn't talk about it?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Also, my current work experience is a part time internship with the DOJ. I'm not sure if this will be looked on negatively or positively and should I give up my steady stream of income and Top Secret clearance for a summer internship that is more applicable?
I'm not reading all that, condensed version?
ok condensed
1) Should I switch major from finance to applied business economics ( I rather due the economics) and is my 3.6 GPA really too low? Note: I'm coming from a top 15 or so US news school that has some consulting/Ibanking firms recruiting at but not that many.
2) Going to a large recruiting/network event I was selected for next week that is hosted by a large consulting firm. What should I expect, how should I prepare, etc?
3) What is the best way to prepare and get more knowledge that will help me over the next year?
4) Can I use/should I advertise my 99th percentile LSAT score?
5) should I give up my current internship with the DOJ and my top secret clearance for a summer internship this year?
If you want to do econ...do econ
Put the LSAT on the top of your resume, it probably won't help or hurt but you may luck out and get it on the desk of JD/MBA or something
1) Doesn't matter either way for consulting, do what you want.
2) If this is truly a "pre-select" event and not open to everyone at your school, try not to ask a question that could easily be found on the website. I would really focus on making a better "personal" impression through normal conversation than demonstrating your business or consulting knowledge. This assumes this is some type of pre-select dinner and not a standard info session.
3) Very broad question, case interview prep books like Case in Point will deliver the most bang for the buck.
4) Yes, very relevant. They also want SAT in most cases.
5) Errr... do you want to be in gov or consulting long term? If you cant decide, I'd still jump to consulting just because that internship will open up more doors than DOJ, but both are interesting experience when looking for full-time jobs.
