Help please!! Need to choose 2 of 3

Hi... i'm a jobless senior right now going through full time recruiting. unfortunately i have zero offers now but have a good number of superdays in the coming couple of weeks. a lot of places like to hold superdays on the same weekday, which leaves me with a dilemma...

I have 2 superdays and 1 first round on the same weekday over a two week span. 1 of the superdays is with an MM bank that is still quite well-known and the other superday is with a bulge bracket. the first round is with a strong p/e firm (blackstone, baincap, cerberus)...

Out of those 3 i can only choose two, since the firms are willing to hold superdays the following week but at the same time, and since each is very inflexible with times i'm ultimately going to have to cancel one of them.

Considering I have zero offers right now, would i be crazy to cancel a top-notch p/e interview for a superday with an MM firm? should i cancel an easier firm just for a shot at an elite one?

two other factors- I did not do banking last summer at all so i have zero live modeling experience (i have absolutely no idea how i managed to get the p/e interview, though i do have a high gpa and a top s&t bb internship from last summer with no offer). would it even be worth interviewing for the p/e firm or do i not stand a chance despite knowing some academic valuations. the second thing is, besides those 2 superdays, i have 5 or 6 other superdays, so does my cancelling the MM make more sense?

i'm very conflicted... thanks for any input

It's a combination of:

  1. Where you want to work (the ideal situation).
  2. Where you are most likely to get int (the realistic situation).

Think about it this way: you might be more frustrated with no offer at all. Seems like all three are fantastic, so choose the two where you believe you are most likely to get in (you know some alumni, they're likely to be hiring more people, etc.), and go with those two. For my money, I'd say cancel the PE interview. I know that sounds ridiculous, but if your end goal is to increase the chances you get SOMETHING, your chances are much better with the two IBD spots. Again, just my opinion. If you want PE badly, or you hate MM firms (though right now that would seem a bit foolish...even though MMs are hurting too, not nearly as much as BBs), then obviously the answer changes. Try and rank them in a few more ways and see what you come up with. Good luck!

go with the PE first round, it's not easy to come upon PE opportunities, so IMHO, I would go with this one for sure, especially if it's of the calibre of the firms you have mentioned (if you've got an interview with one of those 3, well done)

if the MM bank superday is for IBD but the BB is not and is something like Ops etc., I would go with MM (especially if it is well known as you say)

If the BB is for IBD, go BB and drop the MM

(assuming you want IBD and not Ops or Legal or another division!)

also if you've got a lot of IBD superdays coming up (BB or otherwise), you can afford to drop 1 and do the PE to get the experience, even if you don't think your chances are as good for the PE

this is all just my opinion and I'm sure I'll get shot down by some bigshot highschool kid, but I hope this helps :)

very best of luck dude

MM bank is probably the safest job in these times, definitely go to that interview; make sure the BB is actually recruiting and isn't just keeping face - if it really is hiring, I'd go with it. P/E shops have their pick of the litter right now, and the sad truth is that there are people with extensive experience who will gladly do the job for 1st year-level pay

Thanks for the input, seems to be different opinions on wso too. To clarify, the p/e firm is one of BX, bain, cerberus. also the "bb" is actually an s&t day, but given that i did s&t over the summer and am fairly indifferent between ibd and s&t i think it might actually be easier for me to get it. of course, if they're not even recruiting, then we have a problem...

i think im leaning towards going to the p/e one and dropping the mm, mainly because i have some other final rounds. blah its going to suck if i go 0-9 in final rounds and remain jobless

thanks again for the opinions!
