Help! Please tear up my resume: Non-target junior for analyst roles

Hi guys,

I've been following this site for a while now, but have only just created a profile. Anyways, I'm looking to apply to FT analyst roles within fixed income or equity markets; I just don't think I'd get even get a shot with IB. I know I'm seriously lacking in relevant experience, something I'm really regretting now. I hate to even include a course up there, but just can't fill the space out.

I've sent the resume out to a few people at BB, but will probably be targeting a couple MM banks as well. Just wanted a fresh pair of eyes to check it out, and please feel free to offer any advice you may have to improve it.

Thanks

I would try to quantify/show results more. Did your research of 50 companies lead to further due diligence on any of them? Or were the results distributed to senior analysts for their use?

Access is a part of MS Office. Your organizations under Activities gave out your school. I wouldn't put Microfinance under interests.

Nothing is true; everything is permitted.

I'd echo Sleep Deprivation for the most part:

For your work experience, you just say what you did, but you never actually talk about the implications of your work/give the quantifiable results. For example "Researched and analyzed over 50 acquisition targets within IT Consulting, Healthcare Analytics, and Corporate Wellness industries using financial criteria including revenue growth, consistency of revenues, and EBIDTA margins" this is good and shows some basic knowledge of financial metrics, but did anyone act on the research?

A leadership position in a class group isn't too impressive, maybe shoot for a leadership position in a finance oriented club (and if you can't get elected for one, start a new one).

Microfinance is a very deep and complex topic, if you put on your resume you'll need to be able to talk about it at a very high, academic level (formal vs. informal credit markets and analyzing the trend moving away from group-based models and the implications of this). Also, microfinance isn't especially applicable to ECM or FI.

You hit it right on the head with sleep deprivation. I didn't realize how fast deadlines were approaching so I've been scrambling to get things into somewhat of an order.

In terms of due diligence, the rest of the interns and I performed preliminary due diligence on each company. These research of 50 companies lead to the serious discussions though an acquisition has yet to be made. Would it be better to add that to the end of the first bullet and delete the bullet regarding liaising?

I am working on a leadership position within a business society, though it's been a bit difficult while studying abroad. I have also deleted micro finance from interests. Thanks!

WSO Resume Review Score*: 11.5-12 (out of 15 possible)

  1. Wording/Bullets: 3.5-4
  2. Layout/Format: 4
  3. Overall: 4
  • Note: This score is based on a subjective assessment of three different criteria all on a 1 to 5 scale (1 = poor, 2 = below avg, 3 = average, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent) based on my own experience reviewing thousands of resumes in the past and based on the current state of the posted resume.

Some explanation of the grading:

1, Wording/Bullets: This score represents the overall wording of the bullets and content throughout the resume. Are there action words? are the experiences explained clearly? Does the candidate quantify their impact where possible?

  1. Layout/Format: This score represents to overall layout and format. Finance professionals are notorious for being anal. Although this score is somewhat subjective, there are certain things we look for including consistency, spacing, clean look, clear sections, proper order, good margins, etc.

  2. Overall: This score represents the experiences and school of the candidate and is the hardest to change in the short term. Improving the Wording/Bullets and Layout/Format scores can bump this grade up (usually by 1 grade at most), however, this grade depends largely on the School, GPA, Internships, Leadership, Extracurriculars of the applicant, etc.

We are going to try to provide a candid / direct grading system for as many resumes as we can in this Public Resume Review forum, with the hopes that it will lead candidates that need help on #1. and #2 criteria to consider the WSO Resume Review service that has experienced professionals ready to help bring the #1 and #2 score as close to a 4 or 5 as possible. Due to time contraints, I can't provide more detail and I can only provide this grade to each candidate once (if you try to repost and updated version under a different username, i will recognize it and ignore). What I will say is that if you aren't at a 4 or 5 in Wording and Layout, we can probably help you make significant improvments.

Some more guidelines for total overall score:

3 - 6: Needs MAJOR help / improvements in several areas 7 - 8: Has some major flaws but also has some good areas 9 - 11: An average to slightly above average resume that could still use some help but it is on "ok" shape 12 - 13: A competitive resume that should be able to land some competitive interviews 14 - 15: An impressive resume on all or almost all levels. Wording/Bullets/Layout/format and overall experience, grades, school, etc are all excellent or very good.

We suggest if you score in the bottom 3 categories listed above that you strongly consider the WSO Resume Review service. Whatever you decide, best of luck!

Thanks, Patrick

If you have a strong SAT/ACT score then include it. Expand your middle section and talk about how you set goals, exceeded expectations, and outperformed. Use bold words and be confident. Be specific and try and eliminate white space. Probably include your address on top, but it's not that big of a deal.
